Atari settles over GPL violations

Interesting.

Atari outsourced Wii ports of Freddi Fish: The Case of the Missing Kelp Seeds, Spy Fox in "Dry Cereal", and Pajama Sam: No Need to Hide When It's Dark Outside. All 3 games were based on SCUMM (better known as the engine used for the classic LucasArts adventures). The group they outsourced too had an ok idea...they just ported ScummVM to the Wii.

There are some problems with doing that. First there was no credit to the ScummVM team, but the GPL doesn't really require that. What it does require is distribution of the source code. The story states Atari might have gone for that since...who cares? ScummVM is already OSS. However Nintendo does not allow open source software to be used with its SDK.

So they have a period of time to sell whatever they have. After that they get fined for every copy and reprint, and the remaining stock gets destroyed.

Want a collectible Wii game? Might want to try grab those if you can.
