Playboy to publish 3-D centerfold

A bit ridiculous...

What I don't get is why everyone is jumping on the 3D bandwagon.

I am open to it, and if it is good and doesn't cause side effects, I will use it... but what I find very comical is how the movie Avatar's nearly 3 billion dollar worldwide gross has started this craze for 3D amongst companies in the entertainment business. They investing so much money into this, and it almost feels like a gold rush, with companies nearly tripping over each other to somehow add the words 3D to their products.

They are talking about this right now on the Today's Talk portion of the Today show.  Kathie Lee Gifford and some other lady have 3D glasses on and just looked at the centerfold.  Pretty strange to see two chicks with 3D glasses on checking out Playboy.

Until they do some hologram-like thing with perfect fluidity and color, 3D will remain an enthusiast thing, by and large.  People are not going to walk around with headgear or goofy eyewear in their living rooms.  This is not like going from B&W TVs to color, or 4:3 NTSC to 16:9 ATSC.  Neither of those transitions required anything new from the viewer.  Watching a 42" plasma is every bit as passive as watching a 13" scanny B&W CRT.

I'm very skeptical about any current tech to produce 3D without dedicated eyewear.  I'd love to be proven wrong on this.

Give me 3D video on my PC, and I'm in. Gaming in 3D could be fun, if gimmicky, but this I'm interested in.

Just... Playboy? Do people buy magazines anymore?
