I'm all for raising awareness and the artistic aspect of the gesture, but unnecessarily amputating an appendage to sate some internal belief that it shouldn't be there ought to be a red flag for something.

Peta I consider extreme but I've never seen them lop off a human's foot to raise awareness about protecting rabbit feet.

One thing I do occasionally when I walk into a computer/electronics store and get pestered by the guys working there and the discussion usually goes like this:

Shop Guy: "Hi sir, I recommend this new PC! It's got the latest graphics, fast CPU, and lots of RAM!!"
Me: "Hmm, I'm looking for something a little more powerful, for games."
SG: "Yes sir, this one is excellent for games! It has latest graphics!"
Me: "Oh, does it have a flux capacitor?"
SG: "Yes sir, of course! It has the latest flux capacitor!"

At which point I have to leave before I burst out laughing in his face
