MysterD buys a Gaming Laptop...AGAIN - SC15 Laptop this time.
« on: Wednesday, May 30, 2018, 05:20:51 PM »
MysterD last week ordered a Gaming Laptop...and it arrived today!

Yep, bought an Acer Nitro (which still works fine w/ 900p-1080p gaming at 30fps or 60fps, I might add) around 2 years back, but now...here we are again!
Saw this SC15 on sale recently for $1000 (50% off its $2000 price-tag) on EVGA's site - so, didn't and couldn't pass this one up.

EVGA SC15 Gaming Laptop:
Intel i7 7700 HQ @ 2.8 Ghz
Windows 10 64-bit
16 GB DDR4 RAM at 2400Mhz
6 GB NVidia GeForce GTX 1060 (mobile version)
G-Sync Support
15.6'' 1080p IPS Screen w/ 120hz refresh rate
256 GB SSD
1TB HDD 5400RPM
Bluetooth 4.2
Thunderbolt 3.0 port
USB-C to USB-A cable wire (that goes in the TB3 port)

Throwing some games at it.

First up was Ghost Recon: Wildlands. 60fps at 1080p on High. Barely taking hits here, even with stuff happening on screen. Even the lowest I've seen is 57fps here so far. The game both looks and runs great. Impressive laptop. My previous laptop was on Low mostly at 900p at around 30fps w/ the Acer Nitro V15 (i7 Haswell, 16 GB RAM DDR3, 4GB 960M, W10 64-bit).

Holy crap @ this! Prey 2017 at 1080p here is running at 120fps at Medium like it's nothing. Around 100-115fps at Very High with 1080p.

I didn't know anything about the mobile 1060s, so I looked.  Performance is within 10-20% of the desktop models.  Mine just loafs at 60 fps, on just about everything.  My 25% use in FC5 went to 40% when I changed the rendering scale from 1.0 to 1.3 (everything on high, texture filtering on ultra, renders at 768p*1.3 = 998p).  My CPU always blinks first, and I suspect that will be the case for you too.  At 1080p and below, I think you're going to be quite happy.

Yeah, performance on the 1060m is not much different when compared to its desktop brother, which is awesome. It's much better than say the difference b/t a 960M and a 960 desktop (i.e. about 36%).

Also, G-Sync and 120hz gaming is amazing. Now I know why some are moving towards & wanting this standard. I've never experienced performance like this and seen a game take such killer hits (i.e. a framerate hit of 120fps to say 96fps on 120 hz monitor w/ G Sync) and it is completely unnoticeable b/c of how G Sync smooths it all out and with the frames also going to high. No screen tears either, G Sync smooths that out also. It's just so smooth.

I've yet to see G-Sync or FreeSync in operation, but I imagine they're fairly straightforward with current display tech.  CRTs need to be refreshed constantly at a steady rate, but not LCDs.  You can choose when to send a screen refresh arbitrarily (up to the hardware's limit).  The hardest part I guess is letting an external device tell the screen when to do it.  Now we need a single standard across the board.  That will be an interesting competition.

Looking at your specs again, I think you got a great deal.  Terrific price for all those goodies.

For that sale price at $1000 - yep, you don't see anything compare to what this has, desktop or laptop. All those extra stuff like 120hz monitor, G Sync, Thunderbolt 3 normally don't show up in PC's at around $1000. Expect the PC to cost another $500-1000 at least, for any of that stuff.

Also, the build itself on this thing is awesome. I haven't even seen it hit over 80 degrees, even w/ all this power it's packing and the crazy 120 framerates on games like Prey 2017. That's without even turning any CPU or GPU power down. Simply outstanding w/ the way they have this thing cooled too.

On my Acer Nitro, I often had to turn down the power on the GPU and CPU, just to keep it away from 100 degrees and try to get it more towards 75 degrees or so. And that was often either at 900p or 1080p at somewhere b/t 30-60fps; depended on the game.

I know I'm late to respond to these lines and all about those things being a "coincidence" (or not), but....
