Hello all.

Pyro and I have covered the costs of renewing this site's domain for the coming year.  This led to conversations about the state of the forum, the sharp decline in activity, and how we proceed going forward.  The cost, while not obscene, is still significant for the small amount of activity here that is currently generated.  A friend of the forum has actually been bankrolling the hosting of this site since 2020 without actually being a member.  It is not fair for him to continue with that burden.  The majority of Overwritten-related traffic has been happening at our Discord server for a number of years now.  If you are not a member of the Overwritten Discord server and would like to join, here is an invite:  https://discord.gg/fgXCk99  This link does not expire.

For now, the plan is to operate as normal until the next domain renewal is due.  At that time we will dump a copy of the website and sunset it.  The plan is to find a way to make it accessible to everyone as a resource.  Alternatively, if someone would like to volunteer to fund the continued upkeep of this site so that it remains active, please speak up.  If you have any other ideas, we'd love to hear those as well.

As we have just renewed, we have roughly one year to share contact information, save pictures, make alternate plans, etc.

It's been a good run, but I believe most of us would agree this forum has run its course.

Yeah, I agree it's probably time. This place has served us well for a long time but even I don't really check it regularly anymore since we've got the Discord. I've considered a variety of options given the state of the world, including using a self-hosted FOSS option either for forums or a Discord-like server, since those exist, but we've got a year to see how everyone feels about stuff and if anyone's got suggestions.

I've greatly enjoyed our shared history together and have been sad to see it slowly - and then quickly - erode over the years. I have a lot of great memories of conversations and events over the five (!!) different message boards some of us occupied together and I still think about many of you periodically.

I appreciate the invite to join Discord; however, I'm unlikely to follow. I've just never been very fond of live group chats. It's why I never bothered with IRC when that started up. I prefer the asynchronous, topical, threaded format of message boards and platforms like Reddit.

This doesn't have to mean goodbye forever, though. K-man should have my email address; feel free to reach out to check in from time to time. I don't really care about videogames anymore, but I can talk cars, tech, security, travel, culture, geopolitics, family matters, bourbon, beer... whatever.
