A Little Perturbed.
« on: Monday, August 13, 2007, 10:54:42 PM »
So, I'm out with some old friends from Calgary at a bar here, having a few pints.  I'm in the middle of a pretty captivating story.  Probably something about doing something whilst fueled by booze.  Anyways, there's five people looking at me while I tell this story and my phone rings.  Whacked number - different area code.  I think about ignoring it, but decide to pick it up.  Oh, hey it's my sister.  I'm kind of in the middle of something so I try to get to the bottom of why she's calling.  That's when she drops the bomb.  "Oh, yeah I just wanted to tell you I've been dating women."  The next 2 min or so are pretty awkward, seeing as I'm shocked to the point where I'm almost shaking, but at the same time trying really hard not to laugh because I'm trying to be stoned face and keep the content of the conversation a mystery with 6 people in very close proximity.  It's hard to say if I handled it well or not.

I'm not going to lie here:  Currently I'm having a very hard time coming to grips with this.  Not because I'm overly shocked or because I disapprove, but because for some reason I'm having a slight emotional reaction, and logically I shouldn't....which leads me to be pretty agitated about the whole thing.  She's a big girl, she can do what she wants.  There's nothing wrong with it, and honestly, I'm not all that surprised.  Fuck, if I was a girl I'd date girls too.

One one hand I'm trying to comprehend how you would think of a way to respond to that. On the other, I'm wondering if its in poor taste to ask for pics.

I've never had a sister, just 2 brothers. However I did at one point suspect one of them was gay, but that was just him being stupid drunk with a friend (don't ask).

Yep.  The extent of our tolerance gets seriously tested only when family is involved.

Meet the girl she's dating and ask her out for maximum drama.

Is your sister older or younger? Considering you're ok with the whole gay thing, this shouldn't remain a big deal for too long.

Older.  The more I think about it, the more pumped I am.  Now I don't have to worry about guys like those fucking 'pick up artist' losers.

I'm of the opinion that social pressure creates gay people. Not as a whole, mind you, but definitely as a trend. I don't want to take this thread into a discussion on homosexual origins or anything. Just thought that I'd add that.

Oh, they've known for quite a while now it seems.

As for social pressure, I personally think it could be a factor in many cases, but doubt that it would be THE cause in itself.

Some friends blame me for a classmate of ours going that way...  funny story.

social factors, no doubt social background/circle contributes...

I'd imagine so, as far as relatives go.  Probably friends and relatives.  I could very well be dead last.  She's still not too sure apparently. I don't really talk to her or see her often, so that makes sense.
