Halo RTS in the making
« on: Wednesday, September 27, 2006, 11:00:22 AM »
Recently, MS shut down a Halo themed C&C Generals mod called Halogen. Everyone was pissed off (except people with brains that realise you shouldnt use other peoples IP in the first place).

Well, this is why.

Couldn't get the page to load, but I'm assuming that its on the 360? Any RTS with a controller has me skeptical to say the least.

360 and PC. I agree and wonder what they will do for the 360 controls.

The other question is, will they allow PC and Xbox 360 gamers to play against each other? They are kind of pushing that with Shadowrun.

Well, I recall The Battle for Middle-earth 2 made it to the 360. I still have no idea how the controls are. Maybe the analogue stick controls the mouse cursor? Eitehr way I don't think RTS games belong on consoles, unless they have mouse/keyboard peripherals.

This is very sweet. I really like Ensemble and I love the Halo universe.
Suck it, Pugnate.

Yeah, Ensemble did a great job with Age of Empires; with the exception of AoE3, it looks alright but it's a really boring RTS. The theme is boring, and the missions are boring.

Anyway, a Halo themed RTS will need to be very well-executed, and I hope they pull it off.

Article has been updated to say there is no planned PC version.

Personally, I could give a shit either way.

I could give a shit because I still think the universe has a lot of potiential. Halo thrives on larger scale operations and it's easier to pull that off in an RTS. Could be really cool.

It's 360 ony btw.

Surprised it took them this long considering Halo was supposed to be an RTS in the beginning.

Well, that confirms it: Microsoft are retarded. How can they NOT release a RTS of a Microsoft Franchise for PC, on a Microsoft OS??

Try to get people to buy more consoles?  But this will probably make it's way to pc eventually. I'd be really suprised if it didn't.

Anyways, how much do you want to bet that there is a flock of idiots out there blasting MS for this.  I mean, if shutting down someone for using your ip to create a free mod that would directly compete with a commercial game you're releasing isn't evil I don't know what is.

You know, the two Xbox Kingdom Under Fire games are really the only way to go for console RPG.  Or, if you don't want to deal with the action/rpg hybrid thing they have going there, Hundred Swords kind of has a good system as well.

The Halo universe is pretty cool actually, and a RTS game may not be bad if it is in the mould of StarCraft, but this needs to be on PC.

I am pretty skeptical about a RTS on a console, but I was that about a First Person Shooter as well and Metroid Prime showed me.

I still hate FPS games on consoles. How do I know they don't belong on consoles?

Two reasons: the first is that they always have to develop or add a feature that enhances aiming and makes it easier, good ol' auto-aim. Sure you can switch it off, but the way I see it you should need it to play.

The second is that FPS games on consoles have been deliberately incompatible with their PC counterparts; for example Halo and Halo PC. The original idea was that PC players and Xbox players will be able to compete and play with each other (finally)! Unfortunately after some research and testing Bungie and MS found that Xbox players got their asses handed to them because PC players had the major advantage of accurate aiming with the mouse.

If they intend to continue making FPS games (and now RTS games) I really wish that they'll make or give you the option to attach a mouse and keyboard to your console. They should have just had a couple of USB slots on it for that anyway!

As good as Metroid Prime is, I have to agree with the auto aim thing. Basically they have to give shooters on a console a crutch in order to function.

I checked out Metroid on the DS and you can aim with the stylus! That was a cool and innovative way to do it!

I don't see Metroid Prime as an FPS, though, so that doesn't really bother me.  It does with other stuff, though.

If Halo RTS is going to be on the 360, they better start selling a KB/mouse for the X360 at the stores.
RTS's are best played on a KB/mouse --- it's a well known fact.

The X360 -- and most consoles, for that matter -- are really chopping a huge genre of games out by not also supporting a KB/mouse, which are ideal for those kind of games.

Maybe it'll be like Pikmin. Master Chief will run around and blow a whistle and all the marines will follow him and help him collect bottle caps ammo.
