Topic: Did I miss the memo on Columbus Day parades?

I dont remember them being the italian american heratige parades. Then again, last time I cared was when I got the day off school.

What are we celebrating Columbus Day for?  Because he accidentally bumped into America thinking it was the Indies?  Because he then proceeded to enslave the natives and rape and pillage their livelihoods?  Eff Columbus.  Eff 'em all for celebrating someone who allowed his men to just kill people for fun.

Err.  And  yea, I didn't know it was Columbus Day till today.

I don't know why it bothers me, it really shouldn't.  Oh well.

It reminds me of a story I heard about him.  He came to Spain shortly after discovering the New World, if you will, to gloat about his discovery.  They decided to take it, and while he was on his way to Portugal to tell the royalty, Spain decided "Yoink!"  It kinda amuses me.

Heh.  Well, you're certainly right that he wasn't the first one.  He wasn't even the first white one.  What he did was get the ball rolling on what became what we are now.  Let's put it that way.

I got the day off. With all the recent re examination of Columbus and all that stuff, his holiday has become Indigenous People's Day. At least the whiners that want to wipe Columbus from the history books had the good sense to keep the holiday.
