First Annual OW.net Secret Santa Christmas Card Exchange
« on: Tuesday, October 10, 2006, 06:02:18 PM »
Hey, if the stores can put christmas stuff out this early then I can plan this bugger now. We did this last year and I know a few people weren't able to get in on it even though they wanted to. So I'm giving people plenty of time.

This year I'm going to try use the site Elfster to make the selections and send out the details to people. This way I get to be suprised by who has my name. So hopefully it all works out. If not I can always go back to the names in a hat thing.

And now the details.

This exchange is for christmas cards. If you decide to participate and get a name, you must send one. You can send gifts if you like, but this is not required by anyone. If you send a gift, do not expect one in return.

The exchange is open to all our members (well, excpet newbs that sign up just to join this). This includes people from all over the world, so be prepared to spend a little more on postage if you get someone far away. Dont be a grinch and back out.

How to sign up: Post or PM me your first and last name plus email address. I will plug it into Elfster and they will send you an invite to the group. From there...I'm not sure. You might have to sign up on the site. If you put your mailing address into your Elfster profile people can look it up. Or maybe that gets mailed when names are drawn....not sure. I did test it out by inviting a dummy account of mine and I can see other peoples profiles/addresses, so at least we can do that.

One cool thing about Elfster is the ability to ask questions without giving away who you are. For example if want to send someone a PS2 game and dont know if they have a PS2, you can ask and not spoil anything.

Sign up deadline is Dec 1st! On this day the names will be drawn and automatically sent out. So be sure to sign up by then. That should also give you plenty of time to get something sent.

So there we go. Hopefully it all works out with the site.

Awesome!  I missed it last year due to something... I think I was away?  I can't remember.  Anyway, I'm in this year.

Last years version went ok. Some people missed it because I named the topic something odd and people didnt read it. I think it was also kind of last minute. We had 8-10 people participate.

We've got 32 members registered here...so lets see if we can get a bunch in.

How much can a card be to send to Pakistan?  I don't care if it was $10.

This is an honest question... is there any Muslim holiday around Christmas?

It can't be THAT much, I've mailed cards and small packages to Austraila for about that much and much less.

Sorry all but I'm going to have to bail out on this year. As lame as it sounds, I'm completely broke and have to buy a ton of presents as it is. Plus I don't want to be that guy that buys a shitty gift because he is broke.  ::)

I think this is just a card exchange.  I didn't plan on buying a gift.  Doesn't mean I won't, but I probably will not.

Yeah, I was planning on trying to make a card/mini-gift... you know, something that wouldn't cost much more than postage and what I have lying around.

Yeah, I think that's the general idea.  I wouldn't know what to get for most of you anyway.

Yeah, no gift required. This is just cards. If you want to send a gift, no one will stop you, but its not needed.

Anyway, names should be drawn Firday and emailed out automagically by that Elfster site. From there I have no idea whats going to happen. Or how to exchange mailing addreses and the like. We'll see. If all else fails I do the old "names in a hat" draw here at home and PM them to everyone.

I guess I'm in. So it just randomly sends out christmas cards? It just seems kinda lame. Theres no effort involved so it kinda defeats the point of being sentimental.

No, it randomly picks who you will send out a Christmas card or gift to.  Idol wants to do it this way so he won't know who gets him.  Once the Elfster thing gives everyone a name you buy a Christmas card (or gift if you are feeling generous but don't expect one in return) for the person you got.

Hey Idol can we let the person know who got them their gift in the card or something?  Or does it need to remain a secret even after the exchange?

Also I'm all updated and good to go.

I'm now updated as well.  I put some crap on the wishlist just to see how it works... the site is actually pretty cool.  Though I wonder where it draws the links to products from on the wishlist?  I entered a bunch of stuff and it all came up, and I didn't expect two of the things would.  But yeah, it's a neat little site.  Now I have to go figure out something witty to say on the card.
