Uh, this still goes on?  I remember reading about it in the awesome The Cartoon History of the Universe (seriously, check that shit out) back in the day, but totally thought it was just an ancient thing.  I also thought it was either the Japanese or the Koreans, but whatever.

I learned about footbinding in elementary and high school, but I thought the practice died out around the time of the Dowager Empress.

But then, that was only about ~90 years ago, so it's possible that the woman in the photo is just really old.
