Tech question re image links that look nothing like image links
« on: Monday, December 15, 2008, 06:10:43 AM »
Roadrunner just fucked me, basically.  They took away the old websites, and I didn't get any notification about the migration period to the new way of doing things.  As a result, I had to go with the dumb way of having a home page area, and I can't even use FTP or simple HTML links to upload/link my stuff.  Here's what image links look like now:

http://content.glidesociety.com/image.aspx?id=b6134948-ba93-497b-846b-92e94237c4d7

If you right click on my avatar or sig, you'll see that shit.  Are these reliable, unique, static links?  Or will they go away next time someone sneezes at glidesociety.com, whatever the fuck that is?  Scott?  Anyone?

What?  All I see at that link is a picture of your sig, and I can't click on your avatar or sig.

Yeah, that's the point.  These links behave exactly like "www.somesitename.com/someimage.jpg".  But they're not.  They're going through some additional layer of lookup crap that I wish wasn't there.  So far they seem to work.  The new homepage space and tools are hidden behind Adobe Flash.  You know the frustration of right-clicking on stuff you want to get into and getting back a useless little Flash context menu.  The only way to get external links to any image I upload to this space is to click on an "Enlarge Photo" button, which opens a new tab with the unscaled image, and a link that looks like what I posted above.  There seems to be no way to get direct links to my stuff.  With music, it's worse.  There is no way to download or link music files directly.  All I can do if I want you to listen to something, is give you the generic link to the page, and ask you to go to the music tab and click on the audio file there to listen to it.  I can't even link trhe music section directly.  (Remember, all hidden behind a Flash swf layer.)  All control I had over my hosted files is gone, and replaced with this sad, crippled, restrictive piece of shit.

Yeah, the stuff should work.  It's just being obfuscated by some sort of server database application.

The things you are describing (not being able to right-click, not being able to download music files) are probably exactly why they implemented this.

Wow, I completely misinterpreted everything you said.  I shouldn't be allowed to use the internet in the morning.  This much is clear.

Heh.  Don't worry about it.  I've been at half-mast myself for what seems like over a year.

*Grumble*  Yes, I'm sure you're right.  I can understand that when it's applied to commercial sites.  But this is supposed to be my space, which I get because we pay for it, not like photobucket or some other freebie.  I can't even download my own music files, even when I'm logged on as myself, and not some random web surfer.  Sucks.  And sucks worse: there's a 10-GB monthly cap on bandwidth now too.
