permanently changing a network to "private" in vista?
« on: Thursday, January 29, 2009, 04:15:01 PM »
ok, this is my setup:

xbox360 connected via ethernet to my laptop.
laptop wirelessly connected to router.
laptop sharing internet connection to xbox360.

the internet connection works fine on the 360, but music / video sharing is a bit of a pain. whenever i want to play a/v stuff off my laptop on the 360, i have to manually change the properties of the ethernet connection from "public" to "private". everytime i switch the 360 off, the connection type is reset to public again. with a network on public, no file sharing is allowed, so this obviously fucks things up.

not a major concern, just a pain in the ass. any ideas?

Can you describe where you are changing this setting?

control panel > network and sharing center

from there it lists all the networks you're connected to, and next to each entry, it says either public or private network. to change the properties, you click customize.

Hm.  I haven't had this problem... I set them correctly in the first place so I can't say I've had the opportunity to try to fix it.  Searching reveals other people with the exact same problem but no solutions.

The only thing I can think to try is using the "Set up a connection or network" wizard and see if that helps things.

Sorry.
