I think I want a GPS..
« on: Thursday, May 14, 2009, 11:02:34 AM »
Anyone use them around here? Have they been useful?

Thinking of getting the Garmin 265WT

I plan on doing some more traveling this summer. Want to go to Niagara Falls, Visit my Aunt in Kentucky, maybe go down to Mammoth Cave, just mosey around. And just for day to day stuff. Although I can't really imagine using it much here in Columbus, I know the City really really well.

I'd also maybe like to dabble in Geocaching. Now, I know that this unit isn't really ideal for that since it's mostly for Automobile use. But I hear that you can do it with this, but it's not as accurate on foot in the woods as it is on a city street. I figure I can make due with this just to kind of get a "taste" of geocaching. If I really like it, maybe I'll spring for a hand held trail unit in the future.

But for now, I mainly want it for driving around.

If you spend a little bit more than the one you linked to, get the Garmin nüvi 500. Every place I looked where people wanted an in-car GPS but also do geocaching, that is the one everyone suggested. Added to the cart on Amazon, it comes up as $254.97.

Checking out some reviews, and damn...even I'm tempted. It has some pretty slick built in geocaching features I would love. And it handles Whereigo games! WANT.

My mom has a Garmin nuvi. I think it's the 350 but I'm not sure. It doesn't get used too often for daily commuting but it's great anytime you're going somewhere new. It's fantastic on any kind of road trip. You can just search 'gas stations' or 'italian food' or 'laserquest' and it just tells you where the nearest ones are.

I've always wanted a Tomtom over a Garmin because you can download Mr. T's voice to it.

Thats pretty awesome, heh.

Thanks Idol. I'll have to look more into that one. The only thing I don't like about it is 3.5 inch screen. But it has a ton of cool features.
