LucasArts releasing classics on Steam
« on: Monday, July 06, 2009, 11:06:40 AM »
Sigh

I was hoping for GoG...but it is what it is. Hopefully we can take the data files and just run it in ScummVM. At least for the adventures. Dont really care about the rest.

    * Armed and Dangerous
    * Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
    * Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure
    * LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventure
    * LOOM
    * Star Wars Battlefront II
    * Star Wars Republic Commando
    * Star Wars Starfighter
    * The Dig
    * Thrillville: Off the Rails

Thats the first batch, with more coming.

The Dig was one of those games I would pick up the box and look at and read whenever I was game shopping, but never picked up because I'd never heard anything about it.  Anyone know if it was any good?

Edit: The Dig was alright. It didn't rank up there with the other Lucas Arts adventures, but it meant well and was fairly solid.

Oddly enough, 10 minutes after posting this I was in a thrift store and found a copy of Day of the Tentacle for $2. Talkie version!

I would actually be interested in Republic Commando, I've come close to buying that game so many times.

Why don't they just re-release them all on DVD in a BIG box, too?

Hmmm

The classic adventure games don't use SCUMMVM or DosBox, instead they all have self-running executables for Windows.
I'm getting down to hoping that the exe is just a sort of wrapper for the original game files. I so want to use ScummVM!

Mixed news.

Long story short: The Steam releases are not directly compatible with ScummVM, however the changes made are minor enough (moving the content of one file into another) that support is entirely possible. Its not DRM or anything, so its not like they'd get sued for supporting these in the next ScummVM release.

The downside? They aren't going to add support...at least not yet. They don't know how LucasArts would react, so they are going to let things go for a while with the Steam sales. Hopefully they get the green light to add it in. Of course being an open source project I'm sure we'll see a fork that adds support.

Honestly though if it means that much to you, buy the games through steam, get the actual game files elsewhere, and use them on ScummVM.

Well, that sucks, Idol.
Even more so now, I wish GOG had all these classics...

*sigh*
