Topic: No new Unreal Tournament for several years

Seeing what happened to UT3, I can't blame them.

Of course, it makes sense even if UT3 did well. Too much of one thing can be bad, especially when it doesn't change a whole hell of a lot. Remember when they were thinking of making this a yearly series?

Sweeney states, "Unreal Tournament is certainly a major long-term priority but we're planning not to release a major retail game in the series for several years. So we have that effort somewhat on hold while we work on a few other initiatives."

Now with that out of the way, this is the interesting quote:

He did add that Epic plans to continue to support the creation of third party mods for the game. In fact Sweeney says they will announce plans sometime in the future to " . . . open up the engine to more people to use freely and use cool stuff."

I wonder what they mean by this. Maybe something along the lines of the Unreal Engine 2 Runtime they released a while back? Basically it let people build stuff using UE2 without owning a UE game, but you weren't allowed to make games with it.

That'd be cool.  And yeah, not a surprise, but it makes me happy anyway.  Games these days don't have a fucking chance to actually shine, and UT3 has really shown some legs with mods and stuff that it wouldn't have gotten the chance to do had they pumped out another sequel right off the bat.

I wouldn't mind waiting another 4-5 years at least for UT4.
