ouch. if it's an unmodded, unregistered, PAL system i could try registering it here and see if they'll take a return on it.

worked for me... for a few hours.

otherwise you can try fixing it yourself. apparently removing the thermal compound from the cpu and gpus, shining up the chips and reapplying some arctic silver does the trick on a surprisingly regular basis.

Why'd you get a NTSC-J system?  Do you mostly play Asia region releases?

Sucks though.  This is one of the many reasons I am filled with angst.  It hasn't happened to me, but the sheer fact that it's so likely to happen just makes me not want to use the fucking thing anymore.

I discovered something interesting about the X360. A couple of my friends have X360s which they bought in Canada and brought over here when they moved. They're standard North American NTSC units. Apparently they can play NTSC-J games, no problem. They don't play PAL games though. I think the restriction on the 360 is not exclusively by region but by regional format.

Also an odd thing here in the Middle East is the same game can carry different pricetags depending on whether or not it's a US import or a Euro/Asian import. The price difference is usually around $10 USD, the more pricey being the US versions.

I know a lot of people buy Asian release games just because they're cheaper, even though they're often identical to either a J or NA release.

But no, 360 is region protected.  You can't play NTSC-J games on an NA unit.  Are you sure your friends aren't crazy?  Otherwise... fuck, I might have to buy a Canadian 360.  Because there are a few J games I'd love to get ahold of, and I wouldn't mind replacing my 360 with one I had a better idea wasn't going to fucking melt on me.

I looked at it myself. We bought a NTSC-J copy of Street Fighter IV (it says NTSC-J right on the disc) and we played it on both Canadian (both from Futureshop) X360s. One is the regular "Pro" edition (White) and the other is an "Elite" (Black). It worked on both of them. It made me reconsider everything I believed about the Xbox.

I forgot: Good luck with getting the Xbox fixed, Pug!

The threat of RROD or any other issue has been the primary deterrent for me. Aside from that paying to play online would be the next thing I'd take issue with. I'm sure Microsoft's LIVE service is great but 1) they don't officially support my region, 2) I don't play online frequently enough to warrant a subscription (I'd rather just have the convenience of logging on whenever I'm in the mood without consequence), and 3) it's so difficult to get any decent connections at all out here, any game I manage to join (PC, PS3, or X360) is quite often not in my region (evidently there are very few gamers here) and I get so much lag I usually get kicked off the server.

You sure it isn't just the one game?  Because I didn't think there was any difference in NA units, and it's a widely known fact that NTSC-J games don't work on US 360s, otherwise there wouldn't be such a market for modchips and such, and Asia region games (which are region free) wouldn't be as popular as they are.  And people wouldn't get as pissed when JP games they want fail to get Asia releases.

I'll have to conduct more research, which will require some funding :P

So far this seems to be the case with SFIV. I really don't know about anything else. For the next purchase I'll persuade my friends to get another NTSC-J and try it. If it doesn't work we'll just run back to the store and plead ignorance "Hey, this not working! My Xbox American!"

region encoding on 360 games is up to the developer / publisher. i know for example that you can play ghostbusters NTSC on a PAL 360, but you can not do the same with rockband.

Well, I am in Asia. The 360s here are imported from Singapore.

Actually, they stopped enforcing the region code thing for most games a while back. The enforced them for the first gen. games but then that's pretty much it.

Most games released today will run on my system.

My cousin recently brought his European 360 over and we mixed and matched games to see what was working, and what wasn't.

Codemaster's Ashes cricket was only working on his.

Blue Dragon (Some jap. RPG), Dead Rising and Dead or Alive 3 were the only ones that wouldn't run on his system.

Other than that, both of us were pretty much running everything. There are a few games that still follow the region coding thing though, but I'd say 90% run on all systems.

Weird.  Too bad the JP games I want I know are region enforced.

So do you not have a warranty for your system or are you just thinking about getting a new one and being done with it?

Yea for some reason the early Jap RPGs are all region coded. I have a few Jap. RPGs that won't run on anything else.

Unfortunately I bought one and it is completely in Jap (no subs), and there is NO option to turn on English subs. Insane.

Played the 360 for a while longer without issues. Was entertaining the idea of a PS3, but I am so heavily invested in this machine now. This is a Falcon chip machine, which is a year behind Jasper, and it still RROD'ed after a year.

The Falcon did not fix that horrendous design defect.  So far, it seems that the Jasper has.  If you end up buying a new 360, make sure to get a Jasper.  Methods to ID them are easily found.

I bought my cousin a Jasper specifically for that reason. And yes, they are easy to spot.

The problem with the Jasper is that it has been out hardly 10 months. I think 360s take at least a year to RROD.

There are lots of recent JP games that I know won't work on anything but JP units.  It isn't just early ones.

Also, why would you expect a Japanese game to have English subs?

Haha, nice.  My translation would probably be closer to: "Uhhh... it says, 'Outrage' something something something... 'shrine'... something something... uhm, not sure about that part... oh, and then he drank something.  Or he thinks you drank something.  I'm not really sure."
