Oh my...

Quote
Servers for the games listed below will be shut down on the indicated dates. You may continue to play the games online up until these dates, but certain community programs may begin to close down prior to the shutdown dates.

February 2, 2010 Online Service Shutdown
UEFA Champions League 07 PC and x360
Facebreaker x360 and PS3
Fantasy Football 09 x360 and PS3
FIFA 07 PSP, PS2, PC
Fight Night Round 3 PS2
Madden 08 Wii
Madden 08 PC
Madden 09 Xbox1
Madden 09 Wii and PSP
March Madness 07 x360
NBA 07 PSP, x360
NBA 08 PS2, PSP, Wii
NBA 09 Wii - Europe only
NBA Street (2007) PS3 and x360
NCAA Football 08 PS2
NCAA Football 09 PS2
NASCAR 08 PS2
NASCAR 09 PS2
NASCAR 09 PS3 and x360 - Europe Only
NFL Tour PS3 and x360
NHL 07 PSP and x360
NHL 08 PC
Tiger Woods 07 PC
Madden 09 x360 and PS3
Madden 07 Xbox 360
Some of them are a little on the old side I suppose. But Madden 09? Sure it came out in 2008 due to how the numbering works, but thats still just the previous title in the series.

The other interesting one is Madden 08 for PC. Its notable since its the last Madden they released on PC. So you PC Madden fans will now have...well, nothing to play online. Way to go, EA!

Yeah a lot of those games seem really soon. A little over one year and you shut down the server? WTF? And you wonder why blizzard does so well?

heh, pretty much. This is what you get when your fanbase doesnt flinch at spending $60 every year for a new game.

EA's problem is they bank out the same game every year w/ updates rosters, very few tweaks and maybe a new gamemode. Who wants to spend more full-proce money on a game they bought last year w/ new content that feels like it could've been sold as DLC update?

EA needs to just made ONE new sports for that particular sport for each console system's generation - i.e. one golf game for X360; one Madden for X360's entire generation; one NBA Live for entire X360 generation. PC version's can go for as long as the console generation games go, since they'll wind-up being ports of the console version.

Then every new year/season for their certain sports title, EA can sell NEW updated rosters and new game-modes together as one DLC for a cheap price each year.

I can maybe see your point but I don't think hardly any of us can have any sort of substantial opinion on the sports franchise games since none of us play them let alone keep up with them. Plus I've heard arguments that the Madden games do significant updates to their yearly released games.

Yea I can't really say anything about sports games and how much they upgrade they are year over year. The only input I can offer is "WTF @ sports games sales. People buy those?".

I'm sure thats the case. Though it also helps that their fans will buy the next installment, and these server shutdowns will push the stragglers ahead.

Instead of having Madden 09, Madden 2010, etc servers, I wonder if they could come up with a more generic protocol that would simply be "Madden Server". There could be the main central server that everyone gets on regardless of their version, something that handles the matchmaking and such. Then each individual game spawns a "mini-server", kind of like the instancing of Guild Wars (or any MMO, really).

So no need to "shut down" servers for individual games. If the traffic slows down then that just means fewer spawned instances of the 09 game and it won't be taking anything away from the main server farm that they are going to be hosting anyway. This is even easier if the game is not hosted on dedicated servers and is instead hosted by the players themselves with the EA servers simply acting as a matchmaking service. If thats the case then this shutdown is even dumber.

EDIT

All this of course assumes EA doesn't just want to be dicks and force people to buy the newest version of their sports games.

Oh, I'm sure that's part of their plan, too - Especially since the last PC Madden will have their servers shut down. I bet it means Madden might be coming back to the PC - then again, if it's not profitable here, maybe not.

We know EA said their sports games might come back to the PC, but likely if they do, w/ a very different business model. I'm thinking if they do this - as I stated way above - they drop one sports game for a said generation (maybe for 5 years - usually the life of a console generation or the life of a PC for most people who do upgrades now and again) - but each year have yearly roster updates + a new game mode for paid-DLC. Why not? I mean, it's a better looking business model then say buying Madden every year for roster updates, tweaks, and maybe one new game-mode at full-freaking price.

Another big problem is - around the end of the year, EA banks out the Entire EA Sports Collection for That Year (includes Tiger Woods Golf, NBA Live, Madden, NHL, NASCAR) at the same price of $40 that I could've spend on ONE of those games earlier in the year. I think that's a lot of decent sports games for the bang-for-that-buck. I'd guess many gamers will sit and wait for the Sports Collection Box For The Year.

I've had to break myself from buying Madden every year.  I always get the itch around release, but in the past 5 years or so I've only bought two installments.  Even then I ended up trading those two in before the value dropped so realistically i've got maybe 50 bucks invested overall.

I'd be much more interested in a yearly installment of Tecmo Super Bowl

EA -> More servers shut-down already and are being planned to be shutdown by EA.

Online Service Updates

Our licensing deal with Middle-earth Enterprises has expired, forcing us to shutdown the online services for The Lord of the Rings™ games. We hope you have enjoyed playing these games online and appreciate your patronage. There's still time for one last epic tower rush!

Also, The Sims Carnival at www.simscarnival.com  will not be available after January 16th 2011.  After January 16th 2011, you will not be able to access any content from The Sims Carnival.  Any games that you may have created or modified or other content that you have created on the website will no longer be available to you.  Also any embedded links to games on The Sims Carnival website will no longer function. We thank you for playing with us on The Sims Carnival. We hope you've enjoyed the site as much as we have and that we'll see you again in another great EA game!

As background information, the EA SPORTS™ games scheduled for shutdown in February and March 2011 represent roughly 1% of all peak online players across all EA titles. Despite some people's perception, there is a lot of behind-the-scenes work involved with keeping these older games up and running. We would rather our hard-working engineering and IT staff focus on keeping a positive experience for the other 99% of customers playing our more popular games. These decisions to retire games is never easy. The development teams and operational staff pour their hearts into these games almost as much as the customers playing them and it is hard to see one retired. We hope you have gotten many hours of enjoyment out of the games and we appreciate your ongoing patronage.

If you have further questions about your account or the shut down of these services, please visit http://support.ea.com.

Thank you,
Electronic Arts

Instead of having Madden 09, Madden 2010, etc servers, I wonder if they could come up with a more generic protocol that would simply be "Madden Server". Of course you can do that.  A server is usually thought of as a piece of hardware, but really it is software that "serves" something up whether that be files, an application, media, e-mail... whatever.  Game servers work the same way.  It's an application that runs that listens for traffic on specific ports and then does something and responds ("serves").  There is nothing that says that more than one server application can't be hosted on the same hardware.  There are tons of examples, like Windows Small Business Server 2003 (runs Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Exchange, and SQL Server 2000, all of which are "servers").

The only thing I can think of that would get in the way is if the server application for their games is configured to use all of the RAM and lock other processes out of certain processor cores or each iteration of the game talks on the same exact ports.  That last point is probably likely.
