Cliff Bleszinski on Jimmy Fallon - Gears of War 3
« on: Tuesday, April 06, 2010, 01:41:57 PM »
Probably Gears of War 3. Not only does another Gears game make sense, but he's all but announced it numerous times. I keep hearing him in interviews say, "we can't announce Gears 3 yet, but I promise we're working on multiple unannounced projects."

For all the hate Gears gets for being brown, overly shiny, overflowing with testosterone, or whatever, I fucking loved it. I can't wait for more. Maybe the matchmaking and multiplayer overall will be better this time?

EDIT: It's Gears of War 3, obivously. For now you can see the segment of just Cliffy B and the trailer at latenightwithjimmyfallon.com

Despite its issues on the PC - i.e. the infamous stutter issue - Gears PC was still quite good.

Now, someone convince Cliffy B, Epic, and Microsoft to bring Gears 2 PC and Gears 3 here, I'd be even happier. But, chances are probably not too good. Really, though - MS should take advantage of G4WL, since it's there...

d, you only need to say it once. not every thread where someone mentions gears. also - if you want to play console games so much, buy a fucking console and stop whining. sorry dude, but it's getting really tired.

anyway... yes. gears is really fucking cheesy, but it's fun. some of the best co-op i've played and horde mode was a complete blast. looking forward to the next instalment.

Gears was ridiculous but oh so awesome.  I did, however, think the multiplayer sucked and was straight from 1998. That's cool though, the single player part more than justified the purchase.

The Gears of War franchise is awesome.  I didn't like the competitive multiplayer but SP and coop (and Horde mode in Gears of War 2) made up for it.

Apparently he was bumped or something, now it's gonna be on monday.

I guess at least I won't have to see Justin Beiber, as he's one of tonight's guests. No doubt there'll be some equally bad guests on Monday too though.

You know I'm all in on that one.
Don't have to even ask.

If you bring #1 in the series here, Epic - dammit, bring the damn rest here. Seriously.
Find a way to market PC version and get people to NOT pirate the game.
If Valve of all fuckin' companies can figure it out, so can Epic and Microsoft.

Bulletstorm officially announced, click here for the press release.

Also, CliffyB clarified on his Twitter feed:

I never said 2 games ON Fallon, I said 2 games on MONDAY. Y'all inferred 2 games on the show. :)

So Bulletstorm now, Gears 3 tonight.

Click to watch just the Cliffy B part and the trailer. Thank God too, I don't think I could have stomached any more of Jimmy Fallon. That shit was beyond stupid.
Of course it's all cinematic, no gameplay. Maybe we'll see a few minutes of gameplay demonstration at E3. Of course, it won't be some huge deviation from the first 2 games, so we know basically what to expect.

EDIT: Gears 3 release date: April 2011, "probably around April 8th."

Microsoft is hinting that there could be a Gears 4.

Quote
Microsoft is hinting that Gears of War 3 may not be the final game in Epic's third-person shooter franchise.

In an official statement released last night, Microsoft described the storyline of the new game, suggesting that it will not necessarily conclude the franchise but, rather, the storyline started by the first two titles.

"[...] Gears of War 3 plunges players into a harrowing tale of hope, survival and brotherhood that will conclude the current story arc for Gears of War," said the release.

As British trade magazine MCV points out, the language is highly reminiscent of Microsoft's Halo franchise, which -- despite concluding its story in Halo 3 -- has seen continued support with Halo Wars, Halo ODST and Halo Reach.

Its funny how after the fuss over MW2 dedicated servers every other dev wants to jump in and advertise that they indeed have dedicated servers. Thats great, but the company is running all the servers. They sorta missed the point that gamers (PC gamers, specifically) wanted the ability to run the servers themselves.

I dunno, I appreciate dedicated servers for consoles, even though it's pretty much transparent to the end user. BFBC2 had them, and it was less laggy and more stable than MW2 because of it.

Yeah, because these servers always end up getting shutdown after a few years.  I can still go back and play Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory if I want to.

I have to see that I almost felt embarrassed by that GoW trailer on Jimmy Fallon. Not only was it a terrible trailer, but the art style of GoW is so generic and stereotypical.

So far all the footage I've seen of GoW3 has been unimpressive. From a technical view, it looks like it's missing specular lighting and bump-mapping; everything looks flat and bland. I'm just comparing it visually to GoW1.

Maybe they're just showing off the gameplay mechanics and not the visuals.. Still, it's a mistake especially with franchise whose fans are predominantly console players (who are generally unaware of technical graphics technology and terminology).

I guess that's why. Console gamers don't notice.

I still can't believe how much worse the Crysis 2 facial textures looked than those of Crysis 1. I am hoping that is limited to the console versions.

That assumption only holds if all console players are ignorant morons.  Even a vocal informed minority serves as a heads up to everyone.  Besides, you don't need a PhD in CGI to tell when something looks like shit.

Haha that's true but my generalization refers to the average PC player's access to graphics settings versus the average console player. I mean, how often does a console player have to tweak antialiasing, anisotropic filtering, texture quality, lighting effects, shader quality, etc.?

The average PC player is essentially forced to learn new vocabulary and technical functions, while the average console player just jumps in without any need to tune and tweak. There are advantages and disadvantages to both sides, it really comes down to what the player wants to do. I prefer having as much control over my settings, I take some joy in figuring out the right balance to get a game running smoothly without compromising much quality. I can definitely see the appeal in not worrying about it at all as well! hehe

Once again, these statements are generalizations! :D

I think its just the Unreal engine starting to show its age. While I certainly wont agree it looks like shit, there is some blandness that is starting to become more apparent. Like Ive currently been playing Batman Arkham Asylum and I'm finding some environments and textures looking pretty weak.

I don't know, man. The footage I've seen of Gears of War 3 actually looks worse that Gears of War 1; I don't know if that's due to the video capture quality (even though I was watching at 720p) or the engine itself. I also watched TechSpotLight.net's video and it really looks unimpressive!

Yea it must be something else. There is no logical reason why the third installment in the franchise would look worse than the first, when they are all out on the same console.
