I did a search for "penetrative" on Google to see what that term meant in Geology, and this was the first page to show up:

This is far more interesting.

This thread made me laugh then made me really sad.  Fuck my life.

I was on the verge of a witty rock joke too, damn it.  You people threw me off.

Hahaha!  I did that too, and got directed to the same page.  Your take on it was way better.

It's pretty much just like that. Just add a rock hammer into the free hand and you got the idea.

I'll be going at this for the next 2.5ish weeks. We've started to get into a routine of getting up at 7, going over more academic stuff until about 9:30, and then working in the field until about 4.  After dinner we usually have some sort of lecture or something. It's pretty all encompassing.

If anyone is curious, this is more or less where my base camp is. We're mapping about 8 miles to the north.

Awesome.

My grandpa worked for the USGS for a long time. He showed me a bunch of maps that he did the last time I was at his place (years and years ago) and I loved it.

I have returned a man geologist... well, I really don't feel anymore like a geologist than I before I left, but I am done with all my undergraduate work now. Exciting stuff.

The trip was pretty cool, the work was great, and I got to experience (?) a completely different part of the country. The only real downside was that the instructor was a bit of a douche, but I knew that going in.

Now it's time to starting getting my shit together so I can become a super geologist.

Now what, exactly, does becoming a "super geologist" entail?

About six years of research, teaching, and field studies so that I can call myself an expert in something total obscure.

Ouch.  But at least it's practical and you'll be making money/moving up in that time, right?

Making money and moving up don't really factor into the equation since I'll be a grad student. I guess I'll be developing a reputation for myself and all that sort. At least I won't have to pay anything for all this since I more or less have a full ride.

That's more or less the average for a PhD in geosciences.

For some reason I was thinking Masters. That makes sense.
