I downloaded the demo off Steam. I think I might get it after I beat RDR. It's pretty cool.

Yes.
But didn't we have a Torchlight thread already going?  :o

EDIT:
There it is - thanks for the link, Pyro.

I am going to use this thread.

So I really like the game, and I think it is worth the $10 I paid for it on eBay, but its grip on me isn't as tight as was Diablos.

Wait, that sounds really gay.

I really want this game, but I don't want to buy it on Steam because there's a decent possibility I'll be without an Internet connection for a while when we move in to our new house.  I just played through the demo and really enjoyed it.

They sell it retail, so don't sweat Steam.  I picked it up at a Gamestop when it came out.

Right, it's still 20 bones at retail though.  That 9.99 deal on Steam looked tempting.  I may ride out to Gamestop tomorrow though and see what's up.

I'm enjoying it. I picked it up for $5 on Steam the other day. I dig the character/feel. But one question: How damn big is the first dungeon? Shit.

Ain't they all randomly generated?  :o

Well, the whole game kind of takes place in the mines. Not sure how many levels there are. But there are a lot. And it switches up the scenery every 5 or so levels of the mine. There are also boss mobs every 5 or so levels. I think I'm on the 13 level or so at the moment. It's a very lost temple feel, lots of water, plants and such. Neatest area I've seen thus far.

There is some randomness to the levels. Not individual tiles or anything, but sections of levels are moved around, and put in a different pattern.

That's how I thought it was "generated" - kind of like how Diablo 1 and 2 do it.

Actually, almost everything in Torchlight is randomly generated.

Unless my sarcasm meter is broken and Que was making a joke.

Torchlight (XBLA) -- Proof positive that Diablo games would rock on consoles

After going back and forth, I decided this Torchlight thread has the most substantive content.  The other one is linked in the 2nd post above.

I acquired the PC version a few days ago, when I learned this release was imminent.  It's a decent Diablo clone on PC, but it really comes alive on XBLA.  For one thing, control of your character is direct, and this really works.  It feels more, well, immediate.  The UI has been completely redesigned with a controller in mind, and I hope it serves as a template for other games in the genre.  Once I got used to navigating the menus, I didn't miss the mouse at all.  The button mapping is perfect, with up to 8 functions/spells/skills you map yourself.  The only painful casualty seems to be the 2nd equipped weapon set.  If that was preserved, I have yet to discover how to do it.

Graphics are improved from my rig, but this isn't saying much.  I'm amazed the game runs on my 2005-tech PC at all, let alone (mostly) well.  The only caveat is that you need HD resolution (720p).  From what I read, the text doesn't change on old TV standard res, and there's no way you're going to be able to use that.

What didn't need to change wasn't changed.  What only made sense with the mouse was fully redesigned.  Great job.  I hope this makes a lot of new fans on console, because the devs deserve it.  Grab the trial game at least, which is the most generous freebie I remember on the console.  I've been playing for a good 5 hours.  The demo limits, none of which kick you out, are Level 7 and the stairs to Floor 5 of the dungeon.  You can play multiple characters and trade gear between them.  You can do all the quests within the limits, including buying maps to other dungeons plus the guy who opens a portal for his quests at the South end of the town.  I'll be buying this shortly, but I wanted to see how far I could entertain myself with the demo.  One good thing about it:  I have the 2 most kickass Level-7 characters imaginable.

Awesome. I'm looking forward to Torchlight 2 still. I wonder if they will allow a "console style" mode that you can switch between. That would be pretty cool.

That'd be cool, as well.
Even additional gamepad support would be great, too.

I really hope they make the controls configurable this time around.

I just paid for the XBLA version, depite owning the PC version already. Basically I earned an achievement and it prompted me to buy the game, so I did.

I really wanted to get into the game on PC, but the click to move style movement just felt weird after spending so much time away from Diablo style games. It sort of felt like WoW with click to move turned on, which wasn't very appealing. I LOVE the direct control though, so I've been looking forward to the XBLA release.

Also, there's a "Gift a Friend" option in the pause menu. When you select it, it says the following:
Quote
Send a message to a friend, and any characters they create will recieve a 'Potion of Respec', which iwll allow them to reassign skill points at will. Don't worry, once you've done a good deed, your new characters will receive the same benefit.

I'm gonna try to test it with my brother's account (silver XBL account, but it's on my machine). It would sort of suck if you had to have a fresh character to get the potion. Of course, the respec potions are in the store as well. They're 24000 gold. I have no idea if that's expensive or not.

So I sent the gift message to my brother's XBL (silver) account. then I logged into his account, read the message, then went to game library and loaded up Torchlight. I got to the main menu, exited, and logged back onto my own XBL account.

So now every new character I create starts with a respec potion. I didn't get one on my existing character. I can put it in the shared stash and delete him, and still get the potion. So basically, unlimited free respecs lol.

Awesome.  I signed one of my other profiles on to XBL (even got a free Gold month) and I gifted him the potion.  That worked exactly as you said.  I created a new character and dropped his respec potion in the shared stash.  I retrieved it with my Lv-21 Vanquisher, no problem.  I also passed a troll fish the same way.  The troll is supposed to be a permanent morph for your pet, but I've read that if you feed him a time-limited transformation fish, he'll revert to the original form afterward (dog, cat, lizard thing).  Having some extra troll fish on hand allows you to experiment without losing the hardy troll.  He's a good tank for the Vanquisher.

A quick heads up:  There's a bug involving the shared stash.  It will sometimes lose everything in it, though it seems to be safe if you use it to pass something along immediately.  But don't ever leave anything in there longterm.  The issue is being investigated.

Oh nice find on the troll transformation. I fed that to my pet and have been avoiding fish because I like the troll and don't want to lose it forever.

Also, I guess I need to move some stuff out of my shared stash. I made 2 characters and couldn't decide which to play, so I've been tossing stuff in the shared stash as I find stuff for the other guy.

I think one of my vendors might be bugged. The blacksmith never seems to have any armor. Not even grey or white stuff, just nothing.

EDIT: And of course right after I post this, I return to town and he's got a bunch of armor in stock.

Yeah, once in a while, he has no armor.  I don't know if it's a bug or intentional.

Looks like the issue is that when you create a new character, the shared stash file gets overwritten.  So empty the stash before creating a new character.  Here is a list of known issues, most of which are slated for fixes in an update.
