Borat anyone?
« on: Sunday, November 05, 2006, 03:53:01 PM »
I went and saw it last night.  Wanted to know if anyone else got a chance to see it this weekend and was curious as to their opinions.

If you haven't heard anything about it, the basic premise is this: Horribly offensive jokes about a lot of cultures/ideas in a satirical way, hopefully with the idea of getting rid of the stereotypes/generalizations that many Americans hold(by showing them how silly they are).  I don't worry that most sophisticated people will understand and appreciate it for the satire it is, but I do worry a little bit about people that may no realize what the movie's goal is and think of it as promoting stereotypes.

That said, overall, the movie was hilarious.  I am just still processing it all.  Haha.
Suck it, Pugnate.

Eh.  "Sophisticated" wasn't exactly the vibe I got from this one.  And if they were aiming at any kind of real satire with any kind of real goal, the previews suggest to me that they failed miserably.  I don't doubt that parts of it were probably quite funny, but I couldn't help but groan during 90% of the previews I saw for it.  I'm sure it was probably enjoyable and amusing, but I'll pass.  I'm sick of "looking" at the international community in general, serious, comedic, whatever.  I just want people to shut up and admit that what the world really boils down to is the fact that we're all Star Wars fans regardless of culture, even though it's been proven countless times that Star Wars is, in fact, stupid.

Your transition from Borat to how we are all Star Wars fans both baffles and amazes me.  ;)

Back on topic, I read an article about the movie, I think in Time magazine, and it didn't strike any desire in me to go see it. I may end up renting it, but I doubt that I will pay the 8 bucks to see it in the theater.

I saw Borat this past weekend.

Yeah, it's extremely politically incorrect, quite satirical and quite funny, but it was definitely over-hyped -- especially w/ an average of 90 on Metacritic, so far. Very funny and very entertaining movie, as I could not stop laughing for most of the whole 1 hr 22 min ride or so.

I do wish it was longer, myself -- and had more story to it than it actually had. There's my big slaps on this film.

It's a hell of a lot better than that Da Ali G Show stuff he had on HBO, which was more on and off than a light switch.

The movie trailer just turned me off so much, though it sounds like the movie is something much better than that. The trailers left a sour taste in my mouth though, so I don't plan on ever watching it.

Yeah, when I first saw the trailer, it did nothing for me, either. I was pretty much like, "Ummm...I guess the Ali G character has a movie....."

The trailer looks dumb, but they were interviewing people that saw it on the Today Show and everyone thought it was hilarious.  One guy said he hadn't laughed so hard for so long in at least five years.

I haven't seen the trailer but I've been a big fan of Ali G since he first started in the UK. I can't wait to see this.

Either that or there is something to what I said.

I am really surprised this movie hasn't grabbed the rest of you by the balls and tickled them till you laugh. Just watch it and post impressions. You can thank me later.

Borat punched, saved by Hugh Laurie

Quote
BORAT star Sacha Baron Cohen was beaten up by a passer-by after he tried to play a prank as his alter ego.

He approached the man and said: “I like your clothings. Are nice! Please may I buying? I want have sex with it.”

But the bystander didn’t see the joke. He took one look at Cohen and punched him in the face.

Haha I thought it was a pretty funny situation :P

Yeah Hugh Laurie is cool. That cracks me up. I love how Sascha still goes to far with everything, even though people already know too much about him and Borat.

His next movie will involve this gay Austrian character he does, Bruno. No mustache and just a little mow hawk. You won't recognize him. Seen Borat yet Ender?

I don't know I don't really like "Bruno." He's boring. The blonde+moustache gay Austrian reporter character was funny.

:P there was this guy that wasn't actually supposed to be gay. He was a character who wasn't gay but gave off gay vibes. Every skit ended with someone asking him if he was gay, and he'd say,"No? WHY?"

I managed to see it without spending any money, and I completely hated it. It got a chuckle out of me a few times but that was it. I guess it's just not my kind of humour.

Borat makes life tough for Kazakh TV crew

A genuine TV reporter crew from Kazakhstan found covering the recent US elections something of a struggle.

A TV crew from Kazakhstan's Channel 31 was in Columbus to make a documentary on the US political system.

But the crew got a wary reception from press secretaries who feared public humiliation by Sacha Baron Cohen.

It didn't help that the Kazakh cameraman's first name was 'Bolat', reports the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Cohen's 'Borat' movie - featuring a fake Kazakh TV reporter humiliating Americans - was then No 1 at the box office.

Press secretaries for both Republican and Democratic parties were suspicious enough to verify their credentials with the US State Department.

"They were really adamant that they were not Borat," said Ohio Democratic Party press secretary Randy Borntrager.

State Department officials who supervised the TV crew's two-week trip say they got apprehensive phone calls wherever they went. Even the FBI called to make sure the crew was legitimate.

"The timing of this was not good for the TV crew, because a lot of people thought they weren't for real," said George Santulli, the State Department official who oversaw their trip.

I finally saw it. It's better than the TV show segments. It's actually probably one of the most genius social satires I've seen in a long time. I'm not sure I see him as a new Kaufman... because Kaufman used his own identity to pull his punches, besides Tony Clifton and et al. Sacha becomes characters to prod at problems in society... it's really one of the most seamless performance I've seen. That said, I laughed so hard I cried.

I have to say, I was a little disappointed. There were plenty of laugh out loud moments, but if you've seen every episode of Da Ali G show you kinda know what's coming. Overall I liked it, but not as much as the reviewers. I guess it was far more unique for them.

I think I will give it a second viewing, minus the hotel scene.

See, I preferred this over Da Ali G Show. Ali G Show, to me, had its hits and misses on jokes and satire.
Borat (movie) seemed to hit most of the jokes, for me.

Did you that Ali G episode where Borat sang *that* song in the bar, way down South in Arizona???
The song about the Well....?

I can't believe they actually sang *that* along with him....
That's the hilarious part of it all...

The song
