I think my video card died
« on: Friday, December 03, 2010, 07:19:17 AM »
I bought Street Fighter 4 for cheap while on vacation and tried to play it yesterday. First time I tried it it played for like 10 seconds then went all screwed up. I did a reboot and had some funny dots on the screen but a second reboot cleared it up. I tried it once more, this time lowering all the settings since I thought it might just be everything maxed out was the issue. Lasted about 30 seconds that time. Now those weird dots on the screen seem to be permanent and I cant get past the windows loading bar (where it switches resolution).

So Im going to try blow the dust out of my PC today and see if that helps at all, but I left it off all night to cool down and the issue is still there so I think its a goner. Now to decide if I want a new improved video card or if I just want to cheaply replace my 8800. Suggestions?

I'd start by searching out Pug's posts on the subject, like this one.

Heh, yeah that was my plan. I think Im going to find a cheap replacement on newegg instead of a real upgrade. If I can get a new card with at least the same power as the 8800 for less than $100, I'll be happy.

This looks nice for $70.

Damn their numbering scheme. Hard to tell whats better than the other.

What's your PSU Idol?

Sometimes cards do that when the PSU starts dying and is supplying inadequately. It actually happened to me way back with my 7800GTX and an Antech PSU.

Idol, I know the naming scheme can be confusing.

This is pretty accurate, I find:

It gives you the best card for every price bracket.

And thanks for that link.

No worries. (edit: That link is from November. T'HW haven't updated for December, but I imagine it is about the same.)

Anyway, just checked.. the 5670 is about the same price and significantly faster.

Do some research, but at that price, from a bit of googling, it seems that the 5670 is quite a bit faster.

Bleh @ Idol having PC issues. That sucks ass. :(

I'll be ready for some SF4 PC online battles w/ you, once you fix your PC - and if you're up for the challenge. :P

I may go against the grain a bit here, but I'd actually upgrade....not a card powerful enough to break the bank or require a new psu, but a slight upgrade.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/HIS/Radeon_HD_5670_IceQ/28.html

Check the performance difference between the 5670 and the 5770.  Note the price difference is ~$50...and you could probably narrow that for less.

If you have to buy a new card, it sucks spending the money for a narrow upgrade.  Might as well spend a little more and maximize the utility of your purchase.

Yea I agree with GPW. It would suck to buy a new card and then have it perform worse than what you have.

For that price, the 5670 is your best bet. My recommendation like GPWs is that you spend a touch more if possible.

I'll look into that. Would be kinda nice. Hopefully I can get one on Monday or something.

There wont be much issue sticking an ATI card in when I currently have nvidia drivers installed, would there?

I don't think so.  Some say reformat, but when I switched from my 9500gt to 5770, I'm pretty sure I just uninstalled all the drivers (with a driver cleaner I think), shut down, switched the cards, and went from there.  I don't believe I had any problems.

But seriously, I do recommend a small upgrade at least...even just for the mental aspect of buying something new.

I went nVidia (GeForce 3) to ATi (Radeon 9800 XT) without issue.

I actually had a problem with my 7800GTX after going from an ATi card back in the day. My framerate was 30% off in 3D mark compared to similiarly configured systems. Turned out I had run into a driver problem. My recommendation is that anyone who upgrades their video card, run 3D mark and compare to similarly configured systems. Keep in mind that a lot of people cheat at that and most overclock, so just google your config and 3D mark scores for an accurate comparison from people who post on forums.

Anyway, having said that, things have changed with Windows 7/Vista and in this day and age, there is nothing to worry about. Driver uninstalls are comprehensive.

My recommendation:

1. Start your system in safe mode.
2. Uninstall the Nvidia control panel, the nvidia phys x stuff and drivers. Do the control panel first.
3. Restart your computer again in safe mode. Go to the windows control panel to see if both components are gone. Sometimes you can't uninstall both together. So you may have to uninstall one of those this time. If there is nothing, good, shutdown your computer. If something still exists, uninstall and restart again in safe mode till everything is gone, and then shutdown.

Once you've shutdown, put in your new card, and go to windows as normal. Don't go to normal windows i.e. non-safe mode windows after uninstalling everything with your old card, or it will autodetect and you'll be back to the start.

Anyway, it might sound a little complex, but it is pretty simple. Only install the new ATi drivers when you've uninstalled Nvidia stuff in safe mode. You should have no problems, in this day of computers.

edit:

Yea I should mention that PC Gamer discussed this with one of the Maximum PC guys and Logan Decker on a podcast a few months ago. They said that if you really paranoid, then you should take the steps (I mentioned above), but in this day in and age you'd even be crazy to format... even when going from one company to another. They too recommend a simple uninstall, or a driver cleaner as GPW said.

Ok, thanks. Ill have to try get into safe mode and do that.

Right now I'm looking at this card. On sale for the weekend, so I'll have to order it tonight if I'm going to get it. I checked Best Buy in case I could buy local but the prices go up quite a bit for a similar card. Ah, newegg...

EDIT
Loaded up safe mode and uninstalled the driver. Interestingly, the POST screen and such look corrupted, but safe mode did not. I let windows load fully and without the driver...hey, no corruption! Of course I assume this is just because without the driver windows isnt really using the card at all. Still kinda funny.

Oh hey now, I might go with this card now. GTS 250, has similar performance to that Radeon 5770, but its cheaper (more so with that rebate), and I already have nvidia drivers downloaded...har har. I may just order that.

Necrobump: So...uh, I haven't replaced my card yet. I'm hoping to do that this week. Looking at this GeForce GTX 550 Ti. Seems like a nice upgrade, plus a rebate and free Mafia 2.

What's with computer parts and mail-in-rebates?
