A game featuring Thor? Now that could be awesome. And hey, new Elder Scrolls.

Totally stoked for Elder Scrolls 5 - about time! :)

2011 is looking already to be The Year of the RPG.

Two Worlds 2 in Jan 2011; Dragon Age 2 in March 2011; The Witcher 2 PC in May 2011; Elder Scrolls V on Nov. 11, 2011; and Mass Effect 3 in Holiday 2011.

This isn't everything for RPG's in 2011, either...

Fable 3 PC will probably make 2011, I'd guess.

So, I heard Elder Scrolls 4 will require Steam, GFWL, install SecureROM, and make use of Bethesda new social program, "the Beth House."

Wait, Thor is based on a comic book character? Fuck that.

Uncharted 3 trailer looks like it was rendered with the game engine and not CG.  Amazing!  Absolutely sold.

Mass Effect 3 -- I'm not sure about the Earth attack thing, but when I first saw the ME2 debut trailer about Shepherd being KIA I was unsure about it as well but it turned out great and even better than the first.  I'm sure Bioware will make ME3 awesome.

A new SSX!!!  Sweet -- I really liked SSX3 so I'll definitely keep an eye on that one to see how it turns out.

All I had to do was hear the music at the very end and I got literally excited.  I don't think a game or movie trailer has ever done that before. ftp://

Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion didn't require any of that, if you bought it at Retail. :P It was only a disc-check.
I think you mean all of that for Elder Scrolls 5 - which we have no clue yet what it'll require. ;)

Honestly - I would NOT be surprised if ES5 requires Steam only, given that we know other Zenimax and BethSoft published games - i.e. Fallout: New Vegas and the upcoming Brink - require Steam.

I'm super stoked for a new Elder Scrolls game, but that trailer was fucking lame.  It's only a year off, show us some damned gameplay!

haha I just saw it and come to OW to bitch about the trailer.

I was wondering if these cryptic trailers that seem to have been made at some expense, actually sell these games. That was a pretty poor trailer.

Oh yeah. I would like to add that whoever is making the new SSX has absolutely no understanding of what made the original games enjoyable.

I just watched some of the trailers. Arkham City got me excited, some of the best pre-rendered graphics I've seen. Uncharted 3 was cool, looks like Naughty Dog will tackle "sand" this time.

I was hoping there'd be some new Homefront footage.

A good chunk of the awards handed out hold up to scrutiny. I mean, it's all subjective, of course, but no one is really going to deny that Red Dead Redemption is a credible choice for Game of the Year.

So the embarrassment and disgrace is not with the actual awards. It is with the show.

I tuned in for a short while, well after it had begun.  An obnoxious "musical" performance was underway, so I muted it.  Afterwards, I listened in.  Some guy I didn't know was talking about how he got 2 accounts suspended on XBL because of trash talking.  He mentioned telling some stranger online that he was going to go to his house Christmas day and cut off his mother's head.  Laughter followed.  I turned it off.

Nick Swardson - he's a comedian/actor.

I'll agree with you on that.  In a medium that is in a lot of ways visual, especially if you're developing a game that is only a year or so away, you have something to show that isn't a boring cutscene or some bit of theatrical trickery.  Give us something.

As a counter to that argument, it's important to remember that most games nowadays are sequels.  Gameplay really doesn't differ drastically between sequels, so one can assume that the game will play similarly.  For example, I don't really need to see gameplay footage of Mass Effect 3 or Uncharted 3 or even the new Call of Duty.  I'm more interested in the story developments and new characters, which is what these teasers do provide something of.

For some games, especially completely new IPs, showing some gameplay footage would be beneficial in order to get a grasp on exactly what kind of game it is.  Deus Ex: Human Revolution comes to mind because even though it's a sequel, the game is the first one to come along for the series in a long time.

You are making the assumption that everyone had played the previous games in a series.  For instance Uncharted.  I've never played it or its sequel, but Uncharted 2 got a lot of positive attention and my interest is piqued for the third.  Yet I really don't know anything at all abiut the games.

Yeah, I don't think that's any excuse.  I know exactly what a new Elder Scrolls game is going to play like, but that doesn't mean I don't want to see it move.  That's half the excitement is seeing the new package they'll be providing overall with something at least generally similar to the traditional gameplay.

I could agree with you on certain games like CoD or Assassin's Creed, where installments come every year, bringing little technological advancement.

However, games like Mass Effect, and especially Elder Scrolls, look vastly superior to their predecessors. Look how much better Oblivion looked than Morrowind, and Morrowind than Daggerfall. It is a bit maddening not to see gameplay footage.

From the point of view of developers, I think they know that just simply announcing a new Elder Scrolls title is enough to get gamers salivating. The other thing is that they probably are stoking their own egos as well. FMV cutscenes allow them to be more artistic, and with them being on TV, their pretentious sides probably take over.

That's what I was thinking.  Game sequels improve on their predecessors, or they should, at least technically.  More of the same is fine, as long as it looks, performs and perhaps controls better.  I want to see gameplay footage from sequels every bit as much as from originals.

When talking about expansion and/or sequels - I like to see NEW gameplay features shown off, too.
