BEARDS
« on: Tuesday, April 19, 2011, 09:03:03 PM »
So I guess I'm growing a beard now. I didn't have any plans but I started shaving and left some stuff and it's growing. I've never had one before. Any advice?

Feed it the blood of your enemies.  I hear that makes it more awesome.

I'm guessing that you gave that advice to Idol, because I start shaking and cowering uncontrollably whenever I see a picture of him.

I have actually tried to grow a beard a couple of times but my face itches like crazy after several days of no shaving and I end up wimping out and just shaving it off.

Yeah, its going to itch at first. Tough it out and it'll go away.

When eating, use your napkin even if you don't think you have anything on your face. Because you do, you just can't feel it.

Thats all you really need to know.

Be ready to trim now and again. If you don't, you'll look like a hobo. I know this because I spend most of my time looking like a hobo.

Beards are awesome but they need the care and attention to keep them in check.

I like the scruffy look from time to time, problem is nobody else seems to like it.

If I want to look like an old man, all I have to do is grow a beard.  It comes in mostly grey/white.

Believe it or not, a quarter of mine is white too.

Now I'm picturing Cobra like this:

Remember to be responsible with your beard: don't be the wierdie with the beardie:

Don't let your beard control you!

Try to keep it somewhat neat or you'll look sloppy.

Also, I find it really weird when guys shave off the neck part so there's a very distinct hairline at the jaw. Don't grow a neck beard but don't shave it off either.

And when you get tired of the beard and decide to shave it off, don't forget to shave it off in ridiculous steps so you can have fun looking stupid for a day.

Yeah I second what most have said already.  Invest in good clippers or a trimmer (I have both) and keep it looking good.  You gotta work harder to keep from looking like a slob than those boys who shave.  Use napkins and wash your beard regularly, maybe even rinsing it after meals.  I've had a full beard for years and I don't notice any scratchiness or discomfort, not even in the humid inferno like summers of Dubai.

Good advice here. I don't know if the beard will last or not, I've got one spot that doesn't have as much hair. It doesn't look bad but I'm seeing if it will grow out. If not I'll just wait a year or so.

Mine's quite spotty but once it grows out enough you don't notice it all that much. It irritates me but apparently it's a family trait. My dad said he couldn't grow a full, bushy beard until he was in his 40s. Oddly enough, I had to start shaving every day at an early age.

Yeah mine is growing out nicely, which sort of surprised me. I'm going to try for the Amish look, because I'm single and I can. I'll get a nice hat if it works out.

As I tweeted not so terribly long ago: Beards are nature's way of telling you it appreciates symmetry a whole hell of a lot less than you do.
