Hmm, can't see any comments.  If it involves facebook or twitter, I don't think I can solve that either.

They don't know the Wii U is a whole new console. They think its an addon controller for the Wii.

This is the best line:

Quote
I can't envision players using the big screen for games when the small one is in their hands.

They did alter the article a bit, but now the author only sounds slightly mentally handicapped instead of full-blown tardo.

    Dear Larry Frum:

This article has been revised and revised and it still doesn't get the terminology right. Wii U= the system. GamePad= the controller. It's not that hard to get that right consistently.

You're an embarrassment to yourself and CNN. I'm shocked your superiors have allowed this garbage to stay on the site since you're clearly NEVER going to get it right. You should be ashamed of yourself.

I can't really blame him completely. Nintendo has not marketed this as anything more than a new controller. The only people that know it's a new controller are people that watch E3 or read about it online. Nintendo has only showcased the controller for the most part, and that's why I can understand people not understanding that the Wii U is the name of the system, rather than the controller.

I don't care if some people aren't sold on the Wii U as long as they have an informed decision. This article fails in every way. It is clearly written by someone not at all understanding what he is writing about. And the little band aid patch job still doesn't fix the person doesn't know what they are writing about.

For everyone on this site that is confused about Wii U, please go visit a gaming website to find out real information about it.  This article is lousy with mistakes, and just plain ignorance out what Wii U really is.  This article really needs to be drastically edited or pulled from this website because it is a disgrace that a company like CNN would post an article with so many mistakes about something that is very well known by the rest of the world.  Gaming websites all over the internet are now having a good laugh at CNN's expense.

This is not a "version" of the Wii.  It is a new, unique gaming system.  The writer of this article is a moron and didn't even make that distinction.

It will, however, play old Wii games and use old Wii controllers.

The "two games" the writer mentioned are actually just minigames from one game: NintendoLand.  The writer couldn't even get *that* right.

This thing is gonna bomb like like Nuke Test. Sure, you're gonna have the Rabid Nintedo-paths buy it the day it comes out but when those are done and the novelty wears off by January, sales are gonna tank. I mean, seriously, who would buy something this stupid? No Thanks.

The Wii itself was just a GameCube that they added motion control too; not kidding. It had the exact same processor, exact same RAM, exact same video card, exact same audio card, it plays GameCube games and you can even plug 4 GameCube controllers into it. So if this is just a "Souped up Wii" it's 11 year old technology that they added a touch screen too. Whoopty Flippin' Do.

Once again, Nintendo had the opportunity to put a nail into the $ony and Micro$oft gaming console coffin and they forgot to bring a hammer.

You're saying exactly what everyone said about the Wii in 2006. "It's just a gimmick, it'll flop in 2 months". The Wii-U has proven its specs to be better than the 360 and PS3, although not by a significant amount. It's not 11 year old tech in the Wii-U. Nintendo has been re-imagining gaming since the NES, and they've done well with it so far.

They wouldn't slap a screen on a controller and call it a day. If you know anything about how businesses work, you'd know taking risks blindly is financial suicide, and that they've thought incredibly hard about everything they've done. The Gamecube could support 3D games, but they didn't go with it because they new people weren't ready. They were working with Sony on a disc-based console and decided to stick with cartridges a bit longer. They did motion control with the NES, but...

Mr. Frum, you may have replaced the word "accessory" with "device", but your article still reads as though you don't know that the Wii U and the Wii U GamePad are two separate devices. In many places you refer to "the player with the Wii U", when in actuality ALL players are using the Wii U. Only one player is using the Wii U GamePad. It's time for a major article review.

This article was obviously written by someone with little to no gaming knowledge and who doesn't give half a damn about Nintendo. Why not hire a gamer to write articles about gaming, qualifications include owning 1 of each current gen console and a PC with a library of games including at least one FPS, RPG, Action/Adventure, Fighting, Racing and Strategy from the current generation.

I'm not sold on Wii U.

I'm sure Nintendo itself and anything it helps publish will make great use of the gamepad, but from the moment I laid eyes on the Batman: Arkahm City port, I got the sinking feeling that third party support will just be "Take some user interface and basic functions you were able to do with the buttons and joystick, and now make them ridiculous and call it 'immersion.'"

I think I'll be holding off until the next Smash Bros. is officially announced.

A cross platform game is never going to make use of the unique control system as well as a game designed specifically for the Wii U.  They're not going to design an entirely separate version of the game for Wii to make use of the controls, and they can't make the game highly dependent on those controls because other platforms won't have them.

     That's fine.

The problem is that many publishers, like Rocksteady with Arkahm City, will feel obligated to make it obligatorily used instead of integrating it uniquely. I can already control the Remote Batarang, set explosive gel, scan evidence, etc. with a standard controller or mouse/keyboard, why force me to take this thing and hold it up to the screen to do that? Can you imagine the Riddler challenges that require the Remote Batarangs, and having to raise and lower, raise and lower the pad before you get it finally? Unnecessary chore.

A better way to integrate it would've been for context sensitive information relay. If a villain is in a scene ,it brings up their bio for you to browse through. If you're in combat, it provides real time score tracking and performance evaluation and skill commands.

What the author is calling the Wii U is actually just the Wii U gamepad.  It is the controller for the Wii U Console, not the Console itself.  Seriously, if you are going to pay someone to cover E3, CNN, you really ought to make sure they are familiar with the industry first.  All around poor journalism right here.

"Overall, the Wii U is a solid hybrid of a souped-up Wii system and a handheld gaming device. It's larger than a traditional console controller, but not so heavy that it would cause fatigue problems"

Doesn't he state right here that the Wii U is a console? Or system if you would prefer. In context, he compares it to a controller for a size comparison. Where does he say it is a controller? Maybe I'm missing something?

Guess what...this article is complete nonsense.  The Wii U is not a peripheral.  It is a brand new console to be released by Nintendo later this year.  Yes, it is a NEW console and not an addon.  Same with the DS and 3DS,  The 3DS is a NEW handheld and not an upgraded DS. Why do these people write articles without doing the proper research.  It makes all of their opinions invalid since they have no clue what they are talking about...

Mr. Frum, do you really think the controller you held is an add-on accessory for the Wii?  Because it isn't.  The Wii U is an entirely new console, and the tablet-like Gamepad is merely the controller for the new console.

For goodness sake, get your facts straight **before** you write the article.

I honestly don't know how much less effort could have gone towards this article.

This is why people who don't know about video games should not write about them, they're completely ignorant and don't even research their topics. I bet this is why all the soccer moms and stubborn old congressman have such a negative opinion on video games.

You know what, Larry Frum is not the problem here. The problem is CNN completely abandoned basic journalistic standards here. This is a breakdown in the implicit trust people place in CNN. Journalism without integrity and without fact checking and the most basic verification is not journalism. For shame CNN.

Wow, what a fail. What happened to journalists actually doing research before writing articles? Wii U is a new console system not an accessory for the Wii. In addition, the controller is called the Wii U GamePad, not the Wii U; Wii U is the system, Wii U GamePad is the controller for the Wii U, understand? Also, the 2 games mentioned are not really games per se but more like mini games within the NintendoLand game (yet no mention of NintendoLand in the article).

Wii's attach rate is currently just a little higher than 8. That is absolutely a respectable attach rate, and any commenters trying to make ridiculous claims about the Wii need to check their facts before they embarrass themselves.

"kid titles like pikmin 3" " Will Nintendo's forthcoming Wii U controller breathe new life into its aging Wii console?".......Pikmin isn't a "kid title" they probably wouldn't get past level 2, and this new controller isn't breathing new life into anything, it's a whole new console.

But Pikmin IS a kid's game. I played the original as a kid, and got all 30 ship parts and everything. The thing is, being made for children doesn't make it a bad game, and certainly not an easy one - after all, just about everything on the NES (SMB, Castlevania, Megaman) was made for kids, and those games were tough as nails. You're confusing "games made for children" for "games made for casuals".

Mayael, you confuse core games with casual games.

Nintendo had zero inovation, ZERO, the waggle wiimote was a gimmick and that why it only appealed to casuals, most of the core gamers used the classic gamepad or had an option for one, even games from Nintendo.

Sony and Microsoft made the Kinect and the Move to appeal to teh casuals, nothing more, just extra money.

Statistically Wii had the LOWEST attach rate, with all the 90 millions wii sold, overwhelming majority of people used it as Wii Sports consoles or Wii balance board console, when xbox had attach rate of 6 games, Wii had 2.

Innovation means that people actually use the hardware, the waggle is long forgotten.

if you call gimmicks innovation then kinect is a much better one, at least its used for since, building robots, 3D scanning and ton of other...

You have a narrow minded view of things.  Nintendo has a proven track record of being revolutionary and trend setting.  The Playstation Move and XBox Kinect were direct results of Nintendo's innovation.  There was obviously potential profits to be had there, or else they wouldn't have followed suit.  Maybe you don't care for Nintendo and their products; but there are a great many that do.  You may decry Zelda and Mario as being "kiddy," but I doubt those title's developers would waste their time listening.  Indeed, most gaming reviews routinely rank Nintendo's flagship titles as some of the best of the year.

I applaud Nintendo for trying to do something different.  I, personally, can only play so many FPS type games.  And graphics are great, but in the end graphics will always take a back seat to game play and fun.

Dude... Do some research on these things before you try to post news about them. The Wii U is an entirely new console, not an add-on for the Wii. The controller you're referring to is called the Wii U GamePad. Pikmin 3 isn't meant to be a "kid title," it's a "people title," for everyone, regardless of age.

I don't know if you post about video games a lot, but if you do, I can only hope that you actually research them, unlike with this piece of writing.

    One of several possibilities:

    - He does not have a Wii, does not play games, and therefore doesn't notice the high resolution graphics capabilities of the WiiU CONSOLE.

    - He was not listening to Nintendo when they stated several times at E3 that WiiU was a new console and not a controller for the old Wii.

    - WiiU console being backwards compatible with Wii controllers and balance board confused his delicate brain.

    - He is trolling Nintendo and having a good time reading comments.

    I think the latter.

I got my hands on the redesigned system, which was first previewed a year ago, after Nintendo's Electronic Entertainment Expo event in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

Here are my first impressions:

First, the Wii U Game Pad. It is smaller than a tablet, but larger than your mobile phone. It doesn't feel heavy in the hands, and you will really have to try hard to snap it in two (not recommended). The Wii U Game Pad is part controller and part handheld console, and new games are expected to take advantage of both abilities

hahaha they did edit it! But the rest of the article does give some impression that he is still confused that the WiiU controller isn't the entire system. :P
