I got an Xbox360
« on: Friday, November 24, 2006, 09:12:16 AM »
Yeah. Pretty much out of frustration of not getting a Wii yet, and I wanted something to play this weekend. I figure there are some great games coming out for it finally, and I was going to get it eventually. I just decided to grab it. I got the core system, and Gears of War.

Stupid question though. Do I need a memory card to save shit with the core system or does it have enternal mem? Yeah, I never looked at the specs or anything really.

Think I should have sprung for the premium?

With the core, I think you have to buy memory cards.  Or the hard drive.

Yeah, it kind of sucks.  Springing for the Premium I have discovered is a much better deal as a 64MB memory unit is going to cost you like 40-something bucks in the first place, which is kind of a rip.  New controllers are expensive as fuck, too.  But I didn't want a wireless controller and was trying to save money, so I went with the Core system and a memory unit.  It's actually good to have a memory unit lying around, too, as the save systems can be storage unit dependent sometimes (i.e. you get one save per storage unit and no more).  So at worst, you end up spending an extra 50 bucks down the line on the hard drive.  It isn't really that terrible.  I think it depends more on whether or not you want a wireless controller and the headset.  If that's the case, then Premium is probably better choice than Core.

Gears of War is fucking dope so far. I'm going to run and get a memory card in a bit I guess. So I can save it. I'm like 4 hours into it. Don't want to lose my progress. Going to pick up Dead Rising after I'm done with Zelda. If I ever get a Wii that is....

PD0 sucks.  Just FYI.

My brother bought Gears of War, but had it stolen.  It was recovered though from a nearby Gamestop, and is currently in the possession of the campus police.  He does not expect to get it back.

If they have it, why isn't he going to get it back?  I'm sure it'll be used as evidence for ages, but he must get it back *eventually*... right?

And it seems like a fair number of people didn't care for PD0, but at the same time it got some pretty good reviews.  9 something at GSpot if I remember right.  And if you're into Rare, don't forget Kameo and Viva Pinata!

That's b.s.

How did it get stolen? I guess by the time it is returned the value will be too low.

Whats so bad about PD0?  I fucking love the first PD (and Goldeneye obviously), and I was thinking of picking up a 360 with Gears of War and possibly either PD0 or GRAW.  I haven't played it yet, but the video review looked cool.

Well, what happened was he had 5 games stolen.  He called Gamespot and asked if they had such and such 5 games traded in at the same time.  Turns out they did, those same 5 games.  He also was in possession of the manual for Gears of War, and the one returned was missing a manual.  So called the police and they picked the games up.

But I think it will be hard to prove that those are actually the same five games.  Gamespot obviously probably wants them (or the money) back.  They had no way of knowing they were stolen.

First of all, the story was laaammme.  Much, much cheesier than the first game (and that was pretty cheesy).  And the game takes on a cartoony feel.  Also, I don't know if it is a texturing problem or a lighting problem, but lots of things blend together so bad you can't tell where doorways or pathways are sometimes.

That doesn't mean anything, it's stolen properly.  As far as I know, ignorance of the source of an item doesn't matter.  You buy stolen merchandise, tough luck.  Stolen is stolen.  Ant would probably know for sure, though, I could be totally wrong.  And besides, Gamestop should have gotten the guy's address or something... so unless that was false and he gave a false name, I'd think the cops should be able to track him down.

And really, who the fuck would steal games just to trade them in?  Games are worth practically nothing that way, even new.

I agree with Que, I believe if anyone is "out" its going to be Gamestop for purchasing the stolen goods. If they want their money back they need to find the dude they bought the stuff from. Whats the purpose of finding stolen items if the person they were stolen from won't get them back anyway?

I am sure they can prove from the receipts that the items were indeed sold to him.

There is no way my brother keeps receipts.  Maybe if he bought them online or something.  But really, how do you prove that just because 5 games were stolen and the same 5 games were returned that they are truly the same 5 games?  The evidence is circumstantial unless they have prints in my brother's room that match those on the game covers or something of that nature.

No you are right, but the store here that sells imported games keeps a record with the serial number of the games on the comp. But very hard to prove in his situation.

It was a good idea calling gamestop though.  I didn't even think of that when I had a bunch of my NGC stuff stolen.

So, I've decided I'm going to take the Xbox 360 back to Best Buy, and get a refund. Then I'm going to run and get the premium system from Microcenter, as they have a $100 mail-in-rebate for it. Might as well get the HD, and wireless controller and shit anyway if it's going to be roughly the same amount of money.

I'm so tempted to spring for that Microcenter deal, even though I know it should be the last thing on my mind right now.  I'm not even sure where I would hook it up if I do.  I'm in a transition right now, and I'm not sure what's going to be where.

Excellent... I'd never even heard of Microcenter, but apparently there's one here in Boston right by me.  Count me in for that deal.  Scary, any idea of when the rebate thing ends?

I think it ends on December 3rd. But I read that they were extending it to December 31st. I'm going to go pick it up tomorrow.

I did my exchange thing today. Took my core system back to best buy, and ran over to Microcenter, and got the premium and the $100 mail-in-rebate.

On a side not, I'm so sick of these places pushing service plans. They always give you some line of bullshit. "oh, a lot of these are coming back lately because they are buggy, you should really buy it". Shut up.

Good call, Scary.  FYI, disable the rumble on the wireless controllers.  You'll kill the batteries in like two days otherwise.

I haven't had any problems with the rumble and battery problems.  I'm still on the first set of batteries they provided, those two AA batteries and they're still going.

Though, I haven't really played for an extensive amount of time on my Xbox.

I had to get one.  I went to Microcenter, it's such a good deal.  I got the premium with Gears of War.  Now onto amazon to find some more games.

Oh, and they extended the date for the $100 rebate.  It's until the 17th now if anybody who lives near a Microcenter wants one still.

Heh, I got a bad Xbox360 as well, and my friend got 2 of them before he got a good one himself.

It made me almost want to buy that 2 year guarantee thing, but I still didn't :P

If GoW is the system seller for the 360...I'm not impressed. The game WAS fun, but it's nothing that hasn't been done before. The only thing new about this game is that closet case "Cliffy B" hyping it up personally.

I like Gears of War.  It's not the best game in the world, and Gamespot's 9.6 is a little high, but its pretty damn fun.  I wanna get online with my free month of Live, but I'm forcing myself to wait until finals are over.  Bah!

I got a chance to play GoW co-op on a high-def t.v. It was fun, amazing graphics. I'd have to play it more than 15 minutes to actually get a feel for it, but the controls felt a little clunky. That was probably just because I had no idea what the hell I was doing, though.

The controls feel clunky for about 15-20 minutes, then you get the hang of it and they're awesome.  My *only* complaints with the game are that it was too short, and that they developed so much cool backstory stuff and then just hinted at it.  The next game sure as hell better get more into the people's pasts and stuff.  Oh, and the boss fights didn't use the game's dynamics at all.  Those weren't so hot.  Still, everything else was just so purely awesome it didn't even matter.  I have high hopes for the next one.
