I have to part with my babies...
« on: Wednesday, September 13, 2006, 05:51:22 PM »
My babies

Two tickets to the Bengals vs. Steelers game at home.  I have to part with them because I paid $300 for them, and I need the money.   I'm going to sell them on eBay.  :(

Has anyone here ever sold anything on eBay?  Do you have any tips?

I too have contemplated selling some stuff on eBay (re. my WoW account), but I am apprehensive to do so.

Well, my ex has sold stuff on eBay.  I've even taken digital photos of some of the stuff she wanted to sell.  But I have not messed with the eBay site at all.  She fills in this form, uploads the pix, sets price, etc.  The details are very fuzzy, since I just watched her do it, over her shoulder.  I think getting paid might be an issue if you don't have Pay Pal.  I don't know.  I never understood why this business isn't strictly C.O.D.  Can't screw a buyer if it's C.O.D., although I suppose a lot of seller time and freight charges can be wasted.

I've sold a couple things on ebay.  A telescope that I got around $900 for, and a bunch of old anime VHS tapes that a friend gave me and refused to take back.

My only real advice is to calculate shipping carefully so you don't screw yourself over, and to go without a reserve and let ebay work its magic.

As far as getting paid goes, as the seller you don't have to mail the product until the money is in your account.  I usually say in the first email to the winner that I won't mail the product until I can see the check cleared in my account.  Paypal sucks if you're a seller.

Why does Paypal suck if you are a seller?

I actually don't know all that much about it, but from what I've heard it can be bad news, especially if you have an account that holds a balance.

Ah, ok.  Yeah, I know about that site.  I'm not sure how I'm going to swing avoiding Paypal though.  I've considered setting up a separate bank account at a separate bank just for Paypal before, but I barely use eBay and have never sold anything, so I just never bothered.

Oh man I forgot about this. Very quickly, if you sell those for around $300, expect to pay $10 in ebay and Paypal fees.

My advise is to advertise in the local papers first. It is a local game right? So go for the classifieds, this way you can meet the person first and do it for cash.

Also PayPal is expensive and can rape you, but if you plan to sell regularly you might as well use it. Otherwise people will be happy to send you a money order.

I'll write in more detail in a few hours.

Why bother with paypal?

Just take a personal check, or cash since it will probably be a local person who buys them.  Someone bidding in football tickets isn't going to care about using a credit card.

Yea it will be a local person surely, which is why I think you should advertise in the local papers first.

You could always try craigslist as well.
