John Carmack joins Oculus Rift

Chief Technology Officer

He'll be working there full time but it seems like he will still have ties to id. Still really weird, but it makes me sort of excited to try a Rift. Every time someone talk about it it's always positive.

Weird. Is shit like that ever going to go anywhere? I can't see myself using it at all unless the software it enhances gets a whole lot bigger and better, something so deep and exhaustive it just begs to have that kind of tech behind it.

Selfish consumer point of view: If id falls apart, maybe Zenimax will either replenish their ranks with fresh people, or just hand the id properties off to someone else. We'd hopefully get Wolfenstein/Doom/Quake games more frequently (and maybe Rage too). Though even if you question the quality of Doom 3 or Rage, they at least had their technical merits and good gunplay.

I want Doom 2 with updated tech and new, but equally good maps.  Even Quake 2, same treatment, would be awesome.  Seriously!  Everything id has done since has left me cold.

The closest we had with that is Rise of The Triad. It's a great nostalgic experience but it certainly won't compete on the modern game frontier; which is likely why id/Zenimax probably wouldn't pursue it unless they get a sense that it can be profitable.

How did the rott remake turn out? Any good? I don't care about it being modern... the original wasn't perfect but definitely had its merits, and was great for what it was. I never heard any more about it after a couple trailers or whatever.

That looks amazingly fun in a throwback kinda way. I suspect I'll grab that at some point, especially being so cheap. It looks hilarious. I remember having a lot of fun with the original back in the day.

The new ROTT has some performance issues, and looks a little below par on the graphics side. The gameplay is there though, and it's fun. It was basically done by a mod team though. They have no physical office, and their last project was a fan remake of Duke3D, which would have been a free, non-commercial game. (Gearbox changed their mind at the last minute and told them no, so it never came out.)

The new ROTT is not bad but it certainly has its flaws, technical and design flaws.

I got the Apogee Throwback Pack, which includes the original ROTT. I played the classic and the new one to compare and contrast. The new one certainly has more "umph" but while they both have some limited platforming, awkward in any first-person game, it is especially terrible in the 2013 remake yet much more manageable in the classic. I had expected the remake to have modern improvements to the old formula.

As a personal preference, I wish they had done better character portraits, more akin to the comic-bookish classic characters, These new ones look like generic 3D Studio Max or Maya renders.

Nonetheless, it's a tribute to the classic and it's fun in an old-school gameplay kind of way :)
