I've been reading Ars Technica for the last couple of years and they've had quite a few stories on the police state that the U.S. has become.  They even had one just in the past couple of days about a California mayor getting detained by DHS on a flight back from China and them basically ignoring all of his lawful rights.

I generally like Obama's administration overall, but the surveillance state has really ramped up under his reign.  It's pretty terrifying.

Yeah, it is. I really hope we can do something soon to turn it around. One of the reasons there are very few presidential candidates I feel good about lately. Bernie Sanders seems to be have a way better thought process when it comes to a lot of civil rights stuff, but I actually haven't really looked into his stance on privacy rights and tech-related stuff. I'm cautiously optimistic about him.

At the moment, I hope Bernie Sanders wins the Democrat party primary, but I don't know if he will.  I have have no idea what will happen in the general election if it is between some schlep from the GOP and Hillary Clinton.  Anyone is better than anyone the GOP has trotted out so far, but Hillary Clinton?  I don't know...

Then again, Bernie Sanders might be a bit too leftist considering how crazy right wing the Repubs have gotten in the last few years.  They (and Fox News) will get all the bible-thumper/gun-owner types all up in a tizzy about how Bernie Sanders is so left wing he might as well be a communist or some nonsense.

I don't know if that even matters anymore. I used to be largely very conservative, and here I'm talking about voting for a self-proclaimed Socialist. And that seems entirely like the only sensible thing to do. Wouldn't have believed you if you told me that even 5 years ago. The Repubs have been losing a lot of ground lately because some people at least are starting to realize what a colossal pack of buffoons they are, completely in service to corporate interests. And to be fair, most Democrats don't fare a lot better. Either way, if my choice was between Clinton and pick-a-Republican, I'd vote for neither. I think Clinton is a complete two-faced scumbag of the highest order, much like her opposition across the aisle. If Sanders doesn't win the primary, I'll be pretty sad. Unfortunately, I'm expecting to be sad.

Remember back when George W. Bush won the primary against John McCain? Yeah, same thing. The parties like to throw their support behind the bigger name.
