Building a new PC for the current gen
« on: Monday, May 02, 2016, 12:54:43 AM »
Thought about it a bit since the holidays, granted my PC isn't that old (2nd gen i7) and I upgraded the video card to a GTX 970 over the holidays. All I would need to really do is get a new motherboard + CPU and then move everything else over. I had some money saved up and have been catching up on PC hardware again, I usually keep up on what new CPU intel is putting out next anyway. Skylake (Intel's 6th gen CPU) seems to be going for a more budget & efficiency approach, it's got 2 less cores than the previous gen (Haswell) so it doesn't outperform in heavy desktop applications like video and sound editing but does really with gaming and power consumption while costing slightly less. This past weekend I saw newegg had a combo deal for a i7-6700k with a MSI Z170 board AND a stick of DDR4 8GB ram for a little over $400, so I went for it and added another stick of ram on top of it. After that I found a case and the heatsink/fan everyone seems to be buying for builds currently. So in total with tax and everything I spent $655. Not bad I think and I'll be pretty set for this generation of games.

Here's the build list, which also includes the components I already have and will be moving into this new one.

By "pretty set for this generation of games" he means "ready for Oculus porn"

So, let me see:
i7 Skylake; GTX 970; and 16 GB RAM DDR4.
Yup, you're going to be quite fine for some time. Enjoy. :)

I run most games at High to Ultra @ 1080p here on my desktop PC - and I have i7 950 (1st gen!); 16 GB DDR3; and 4GB 960.
