McCain gave an excellent concession speech. It was great, and yet baffling- where was this guy the past year? I used to love McCain a year ago. I would gave voted for him until he won the Republican nomination, where he changed.

He waited until he lost to give his best speech of the year. Its baffling.

I thought it was funny how he just now decided to ease the crowd from booing Obama. Anyways...don't hold your breath for change just yet, Obama has a serious mess to clean up.

McCain ran a really botched campaign.  One of the worst in recent memory.

John McCain was too good for the people that supported him.

Still, congrats to Obama.

My optimism lies in the fact that he can't possibly do worse. And I believe he will do a phenomenal job.

His speech was breathtaking. I cant believe he us going to be president.

The guy can fucking talk.  He is so good behind a mike.  That speech I just finished watching had me nodding my head, something no other politician hasn't been able to do in a shitload of years. What he said is right on the money.  Freaking bullseye.  Does any of it make it past the podium?  Next 4 years will tell.  His vocal sentiments are my heartfelt ones.

Even the people who hate Obama the most will readily admit that he's extremely smart and very well spoken.  Unfortunately, as I have discussed many times before, that means basically nothing.

By that logic, being stupid means nothing. I think I have some Bush policies you should see.

I'm on board with you, Cobra. Amazing speech. Will he follow through?

We cant expect him to do everything. Do I think in four years we will be better off? Yes.

I still can't believe this. How can a country who voted for Bush twice (well...once...) vote Barack Hussein Obama into office? Extraordinary.

Congrats! I enjoyed McCain's speech and only the last part of Obama's.

Now remember what he promised all of you and we'll see how much has actually changed in 4 years. :)

I'm thinking more along the lines of how can a country that voted Bush in twice NOT elect Obama.

Because they don't know better?

In the end we are both right. But over 50 million people still voted for McCain.

I've never been more proud of my country than I've been tonight.

President Obama is not going to be perfect but at least he'll be better than Bush was or Mccain would be and thats pretty much all we can ask for considering the hole dubya has dug for this country.

My prediction is despite the griping and groaning of hardcore Republicans Obama will be a two termer.

If the country can put a retard like Bush in office for 8 years it can do the same for a guy with some semblance of intelligence.

In all seriousness, I was an inch away from disowning Virginia. I really couldn't see how they could vote for McCain...it shouldn't have been that close.

I am one of those idiots.  The problems are identifying that absolute answer and then implementing it.  The answer exists independently from those problems.

There's not - different people vote based on different priorities.  For instance, you once seriously considered being a nurse.  As such, you probably voted for Obama because he's a strong man who could hold you tenderly in his arms.  That's no more wrong than Que not wanting to vote for him because he doesn't believe in his socialist values.

No, just no.  That wasn't baiting you...I don't have a nursing joke for you.  But if you really want to get down to it, I agree although there's a pretty big BUT involved.

There are no right answers, there is only a best answer that minimizes wrongs. Ideal solutions are usually impossible to implement.

You can never please everyone, especially in politics.

That's a pretty dominant philosophy in political theory.  Well, I guess the full thing is that you can never please everyone, but you certainly can piss most of them off. Generally, it's why large parties don't really hard line anything if they don't have to.   The less you actually do and say, the less chance you have of alienating people.  Speak in vague rhetoric, and people will hear what they want to hear.

I really liked McCain's agenda back in 2000, when he was hardcore against special interests.  What happened to that this time around?  That's where he lost my vote.  Well that and the fact that Obama has the chance to be an inspiring leader of this country, something we haven't had since Reagan.

I don't want t make a new thread, but I'm getting annoyed by peoples attitudes regarding the election. "We won. You lost" kind of thing.

No, Obama won. McCain (as well as the candidates from the other parties) lost. That's all.

We all win or we all lose as a nation based on that. If the president is good, things improve for everyone. If hes bad, things get worse for everyone. Everyone. No matter who you voted for. So we won't truly know if we "won" for a few years.

Blacks attach a huge significance to this, and I don't blame them.  It is a real historic moment (the kind that gets prominent mention in history books).  I don't mind them saying "we won!"  They did, big time.  But I don't want to hear "you lost!" from anyone, because that's crap in every way.  The man I voted for was elected, so how exactly did I lose?  A lot of people who voted for the loser have the same chance of winning (or losing) in the long run as the rest of us.

349 vs 163 electoral votes.  Unbelievable.

I didn't mean that in a racial way. I'm talking people that voted Obama vs people that voted McCain. You only win if the person elected does a good job. The benefits of that are also not limited to only the people that voted for the winning candidate.

I think these are the same people who define themselves as being either strictly "democrat" or "republican", and would rather vote based on party loyalty than a candidate they believe in.

Come to think of, who are these people who look at the outcome in a "I won, you lost" manner? For the lack of a better word, it just sounds very immature. There is a lot more at stake here.

McCain was probably the best possible candidate in the country at that time (although, the best option on the ballot was probably Nader in my mind). He was also the next possible option four years later, but obviously never got that chance.  I don't know what happened here, but it was kind of a shit show.  His age is a factor that would make me think twice about electing him, and it's become very apparent over the last couple years.  Beyond that, he was just all over the place and it almost seemed like he was going through the motions.  Whoever was actually running his campaign should probably get a bullet to the brain (uh, career-wise).  But that said, I don't think many in recent years would be able to go up against Obama.

Good job with Obama but Proposition 8 passing sours the day.

I didn't know it passed.  That's pretty fucking ridiculous.

This is the downside of Obama's  wicked marketing machine.  He sold himself a little to well to the LCD. They don't really get it, and if we want to go into the "BUT" I mentioned before, this is where I think it comes in - you can make the right choice for the wrong reasons.  I think it was a record turnout....a lot of stupid people voted.  Now, that's not to say that there aren't legitimate reasons to have the "we won, you lost" attitude after an election, it's just that in all of the places in the world where you can actually say that there are a lot of mass graves floating around.

Congrats to all my amigos Americanos!

I hope Obama will focus more on domestic issues and withdraw troops from my side of the pond. I hope he'll bring good to the US and see it prosper. I also hope he doesn't get impeached or worse, assassinated.

I expect the next couple of years will be mostly rectifying the last 8 disastrous ones, then perhaps after that we'll start seeing the promised "change."

The we won, you lost" attitude comes from the horrible campaign McCain ran and all of the lies his constituents helped spread about Obama. Although, I'm not one to rub this in people's faces, the better man won.

Well, not really.
Apply that logic to the Bush years. Certain people are doing much better now than they were eight years ago, even though many more are doing worse. At very few points in history are we truly "one nation", and
policies almost always benefit one group at the expense of another.

On another note, the one truly humorous point to the election was when Al Quaeda (sp?) endorsed McCain.
It had nothing to do with McCain, of course. But it turns out Bush's policies are great for the recruitment of Al Quaeda. Oh, the irony.

That's pretty awesome.

I still credit Ron Paul with saying the smartest thing during the election.  It's too bad at least 70% of the other stuff he said was ridiculous and he'd make a horrible president.
