Fuck Amazon and FedEx
« on: Tuesday, July 06, 2010, 09:12:05 PM »
I ordered something on 6/21 from Amazon (Amazon.com itself, not a third party seller).  It was a CD and a DVD.  For some reason it didn't ship right away and didn't go out until 6/28.  Well, the package still didn't arrive today.  I just thought of it and checked the tracking information on the order.  It was estimated to arrive on 7/2/10.  Obviously that didn't happen.  That pisses me off enough that it missed the target ship date and the next business day after (really two more business days since 7/5/10 isn't truly a holiday).  But what really got me was all the location information.  It shipped from Campbellsville, KY.  I'm not sure how good you guys are about U.S. geography, but Cincinnati sits on the border of OH and KY.

I used Google Maps to generate driving directions between Amazon's facility in Campbellsville and my house and it is 173 miles and takes 3 hrs. 17 min.  I realize that they are shipping via the UPS rather than having some route driver come from their distribution center to my house directly, but that is fucking crazy that it has been 9 days since it shipped and it still hasn't made it.  The fucking Pony Express would have kicked the shit out of this.

The other sad this is that I don't even know if the item is moving.  The shipping location shows Campbellsville, KY, but the location information for a few arrival scans after that show no location at all.  The last update was last night at 10:00pm.

I have a lot of US customers and I used to use USPS until I just started using a shipping agent who uses FedEx or DHL. They have a membership/account, so it costs only a bit more... worth it because USPS is so terrible.

I'd say every two out of ten shipments of mine were sent to the wrong state or whatever.

The messed up thing is that all of my shipments were labeled by printout rather than by hand, so there shouldn't have been a chance for mistake.

How hard is it to read the right zip code?

Thankfully most of these misdirected shipments ended at the right location eventually, but it was still a lot of frustration.

Unfortunately due to rising fuel costs, even the best shipping services are taking longer to deliver due to cost cutting measures.

It wouldn't surprise me if they are waiting for a few more items to ship to your area to ship them together.

Have you contacted USPS with your tracking number?

edit:

I just remembered that you used to work for DHL.

I remember I had a book shipped from Amazon via USPS.  I waited for over 2 weeks past the estimate arrival date (which was absurdly long to begin with) because it wasn't particularly important that I have it right away.  I contacted the seller, who never contacted me back.  I contacted Amazon, who eventually just refunded my money.  I bought a new one from another seller.  They both arrived at about the same time a few days later.

Oops.

Yeah I sent a nasty gram to Amazon and they told me to wait until 7/12 before bringing up a complaint.

Edit:  They also told me that FedEx SmartPost is the service they use with the Super Saver shipping.  FedEx picks the package up from Amazon and drops it off at the nearest USPS location.  So you have two pieces of tracking information to look at.  They told me to start with FedEx with tracking number 9102901001299135142733.  So I did that.

Even though my house is 3 hr. 17 min. just north from Amazon's Campbellsville, KY facility, it first went out to east PA, then started coming back West but took a little southerly detour in WV before it went up near Columbus, OH, which is 2 hrs. northeast of Cincinnati.

Look at the route it took!

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Amazon+near+Campbellsville,+KY&daddr=fedex+smartpost+pottstown,+pa+to:842+Caperton+Boulevard,+Martinsburg,+WV+25401+(FedEx+Smart+Post)+to:2969+Lewis+Center+Way,+Grove+City,+OH+43123-1782+(Fedex+Smartpost)+to:cincinnati,+oh&hl=en&geocode=FSuQOQIdZqDp-iGE_XWWPQOXFynVkV3x1nNoiDGgu_XZulZYHw%3BFSvxZQIdzzJ_-yEaF6xYBT-3kCn1m4_lPYXGiTHs-tU5L6FF0A%3BFTTqWgIdiHha-yEo-8t2i_5C7SlZq5oLzgLKiTHG9CXb660P3Q%3BFULJYAIdRRQM-yFK7WTpu5WX9ikTDE4lJ5s4iDEwSYW1Px_qxA%3B&mra=ls&sll=38.781099,-80.451091&sspn=6.182496,14.27124&ie=UTF8&ll=38.839708,-80.452881&spn=6.177308,14.27124&z=7

So this is FedEx's fault, not USPS'.

FedEx is strange. The last thing I ordered was my camera, which shipped fedex. It went from New Jersey to Wisconsin, so it came around and past where I am. Which isn't a big deal, maybe thats just how the shipments worked out. It was driven from there to my home town, and then...they gave it to the USPS for final delivery. Which, as stated on the fedex tracking page, could add 2-3 days to the ship time! Luckily it didn't and I got it the next day in the mailbox but I thought that was really strange.

Have you guys ever dealt with on-campus mail centers?  My undergrad one is a debacle to the point of hilarity.  I received a Christmas card with a check in it from my sister approximately 8 months after it was sent.  They kindly stamped it saying that delivery was delayed because of an incorrectly formatted address.  It had 1) my name, 2) my street address, 3) my room number, 4) City, state, zip.  Totally incorrect, no doubt.  It would take someone about 8 months to figure out where that one was meant to go.

I don't like Amazon anymore, they randomly took out $70 from my account in Feb, which caused an overdraft fee. Turns out when I bought my books from them a couple of years ago I unknowingly signed up for something called Amazon Prime. Its free two day shipping on "some" items, but the worst part is it apparently started out as a free trial that I signed up for when I registered my credit card on the site. If you don't cancel it after a month they charge you $70 for the year and keep doing that every year.

I caught it, told them I was pissed and they refunded my money and my bank took away the OD fees.
