Wow, impressive.  That makes me feel so insignificant.  I was proud of my big "HOLA" sign and my small lava waterfall...

Those things live in Hell, and they spit fireballs at you. Thing is, the ground in Hell will burn forever once ignited. Yikes.

Obsidian has a purpose now. You need it to make the portals to Hell.

Hmm. Maybe I should remove those two obsidian stones set in the perfect shape of a door displayed in my house.

EDIT 2
WHY DOES NO ONE TELL ME THESE THINGS?! There are some amazing skins in there using that outer helmet. Zombie with the exposed brain and hanging eye? Scott Pilgrims hair? AWESOME!

I <3 minecraft... I've been playing on a server with a friend for over 100 hours now. I just finished building an underwater dome that is a hub between me and my two friends' towers.

Way too addictive. WAY

Biomes video
Quote
Biomes. They’re not final yet, but this is about how they will be in the Halloween update.

Monster spawning and terrain features can be tied to individual biomes, so some biomes could get special trees, or special mobs, or different grass, to make them all more unique.

Only a few more days. Cant wait!

Did anything happen with the OW Minecraft server? I made the post and haven't played since - been bush with school and work.

Kudos to Scott for setting everything up.

It keeps crashing on me.  I don't know why.  I usually just turn it up when I'm going to play, which hasn't been for a few weeks.

Here's my first really planned out tower. It is a lighthouse so I can find my way back to the spawn until the compass gets fixed in SMP. You can see my underwater dome I built (I called it Sealab 2010) - It connects via underwater tunnels the various towers, etc. that my friends have built.  The fourth tunnel will be connected to a hell portal.

Here's my obsidian mine:

I will post more later... god this game is fun.

I'm on the full version, but I was playing it for free for quite a while there. If it fails to log in then it just puts you in "offline mode". The only issues I had were some sounds not playing but otherwise its basically the full thing.

Its up! Server is getting hammered but it only took a couple retried for me to get through. I've already dug into a massive cave system. Really, I hope I can find my way out again. I also hit on several lava lakes down here with some waterfalls nearby. Easy obsidian, except I have no real way to properly mine them yet. So I might make a couple buckets and manually build my hell portal with the help of some molds.

I know Im spamming the thread, but I don't care. I'm really enjoying this.

I've started world over several times now. I want to have something interesting near the spawn point otherwise the compass isn't very useful. Also my first trip into hell had me fall into a lake of lava, killing me and destroying all my equipment.

My current world is a keeper, I think. Not far from spawn was a little cave. Not very deep, just goes into a hillside maybe 20 blocks. I evened out the floor and used the blocks to wall off the entrance and stick a door in there. Instant house with less digging!

There was a pit in front of the place, which was kind of annoying. Animals would fall in it and get stuck so I'd hear all kinds of pig and cow noises all night. So I decided to fill it with water and make a pond out of it. Side bonus is I can just step outside and go fishing instead of making the trek to the shore.

Not far from my home was a deep vertical shaft in the earth, which usually means its an awesome cave system. Indeed, its an awesome cave system. I've gotten tons of materials out of it including lots of iron. Its been a lot of fun to explore because it has lots of branches, combinations of large open caverns and little narrow areas, and even a few areas where I could hear water running so I dug a small tunnel that now leads to even more caves! So Im making trips into this place to gather materials while I try figure out what sort of amazing structure I want to build. I end up exploring more than building.

I made a hell portal that linked me to a portal REALLY high up in hell. Made my way down carefully because I needed to get a couple buckets of lava to run my furnaces since I have so much iron. Coming back out of hell dropped me quite a ways away from where I originally build my portal! Its really strange how the portal linking works. Though I think now what I'll do is dismantle my original and just build a path to this new one. Probably safer in case he decides to let things come through portals.

Though, I play on passive so no enemies spawn. I wish there was an option so enemies in hell would still spawn even in passive mode. Hell is a big boring place when nothing spawns there.

I've had a long break from the game, but I jumped back on as soon as I got home on patch day.

I made a new world, and found a big cave in the side of a mountain and decided to build a town in there. Well really it was like 2 big mountains with overhangs connecting in the middle. So I threw some cobblestone in the oven and used that to fully connect the two mountains and close off the back (except a for a door leading out back there). I put a wall with ramparts blocking off the massive opening so I don't get enemies wandering in. I've got a mine in there too, which leads directly into a natural cave I've pretty much mined out for metals.

I went exploring yesterday, in search of pumpkins (which apparently are bugged, and spawn as pre-carved jack-o-lanterns). I found none, but I did find a huge mountain (the trees on top touch the clouds) in what I think is a tropical climate. There's TONS of trees, and the mountain overlooks a cool bay and has some nice cliffs around it.

I have the materials to build a portal to the Nether (hell), but haven't done so yet because I keep getting distracted working my town. I want to make a portal at my home base, and at the mountain in the tropical climate area, and then hopefully connect them with a path. Apparently cobblestone is impervious to ghast fire, and the ghasts can't see through glass. So a cobblestone path/bridge with glass windows would make it safe, but let me see the environment as I pass through.

Oh and Idol, the portal thing you mentioned is a bug that has to do with the way the game checks to make sure you're on a good spot to come out of. When you make your portal, it places the one in the Nether somewhere that hopefully won't drop you in lava or off a cliff. What it's doing now is when you exit back to the normal world, it's doing that check again, and not paying attention to the portal on the outside that you placed.

Yeah, thats what I figured. Kinda sucks. Should be easy enough for him to just "link" portals to each other.

Oh, and when I went on that little exploring adventure, I forgot to bring obsidian with me for a portal. So I dug down to the bedrock in search of lava, set myself on fire accidentally, and lost all my stuff, haha.

Here's my cave town. To the far left you can see a small castle type tower and the wodden path that leads from it above the other buildings. The wooden overhang in the center of the picture is the entrance to my mine, and to the right of it is a blacksmith. In there I have 3 crafting tables, 3 furnaces, and a homemade incinerator: a hole in the wall with lava flowing down inside. I walk up to it and drop an item and the lava destroys it. There's a little home above the blacksmith, with a table and bed. The well you see is an infinite water source.

I'm thinking about replacing all the cobblestone with refined/cooked stone. I don't like how you can lose some of the geometry in the noise of the texture from distances.

Wow, nice. I haven't built anything substantial like that. All my worlds go like: Spawn, punch tree, find coal, build small house for the night, find more coal, find cave, spend rest of the game exploring the cave coming to the surface only for more wood for torches and picks.

The "refined stone" as I call it, is the same as the stone blocks before you mine them. I used that to fill in the roof of my cave, so it would look like it was natural.

It's cool seeing everyone's stuff and since we're all sharing here's my little townish thing.

An overall shot. A house is on the left and tower/beacon on the right. The tower also serves as my main mine entrance. The smaller tower just behind it is a fancy skylight for the mine.

Picture of the whole tower.

And then my self powering cart system. It starts underneath the main tower, moves up through the water tower in the center, then travels in the open area to a mountain in the distance. You can see the framework of a new tower I'm putting together just before the draw distance ends.

I just now found my first pumpkins. I found a solo one just sitting out in the middle of nowhere, then a few minutes later I found a patch of 9.

I'm also about 4-5 days from my home, and standing on top of a tall one block tower waiting for night to pass. There's like 8 creepers at the bottom. I'm so fucked.

Heh, pumpkins are funny. I found 2 almost right away but then went spelunking and sorta forgot about them. I had to go out for some more wood so I took a hike to a snowy mountain nearby and found a patch of 10 of the damn things.

So, I managed to make it back to my home. I found snow too, which was my reason for heading out. I wanted a snowy area to build in closer to the holidays, so I thought I'd scout it out now. Hopefully by the it'll snow in the snowy areas by then (which it's supposed to). Of course, I wasn't sure that was the spot, so I didn't leave a marker or anything. I'll have to walk all the way out there again later.

Oh how I wish minecarts worked in SMP.

And damage...

And mobs...

And portals...

For now I'm just happy knowing I found 11 diamond this morning before work, so now I have four complete diamond blocks. We turned off / banned item hacks/dupes in our server, playing it more natural like... It has been fun getting our defences ready for when mobs show up.

Oh, and apparently everyone who preorders the alpha will get into the closed alpha/beta for the next game Notch / Mojang makes. Or so they say.

Oh, and one upside to my forest burning down was the fact that it killed a bunch of pigs and chickens, so now I finally have some ham/bacon and arrows!

I have to constantly remind myself that it's just a small team of people making this game.  But I am very frustrated by the fact that the new patch took care of some old bugs and introduced new ones.

It really inspired some fundamental change in the landscape surrounding my tower. I'm going to build a massive glass and stone arcology for all my crops and trees.

I started knocking down the foundation beside my tower. Here's a view from the top of the pyramid

So I went a little nuts the past few days and got basically the whole arcology built. It has a double-helix wood/smelted stone spiral outside, and the ramp upwards provides another spiral you can see. Probably the coolest thing I've built so far. Here's some construction shots:

And here's one final shot from ground level at night

That's all I can do for now until they fix water in SMP. Then I can plant all the crops. Here's a few interior shots during construction, I'll post more once I'm done.
